Hi,
I have taxable a/c with Vanguard and 401K a/c with Fidelity. I see an option in VG to get consolidated view including non-VG accounts. For the same, the a/c info of non-VG a/c should be provided to VG. Wondering if this is useful and anyone has done? Any other alternates? My aim to get consolidated view of all account at one place.
Another related question. As part of 401K, some funds are specific to companies plan and not traded/available publibcally. Though it tracks major indexes like Whilshire5000, it does not have a symbol. One (the above mentioned VG facility) would need symbol to analyse each fund. Any way to handle this?
Thank you.

Every fund has a symbol. Ask your HR for symbols if you can't find. I had done the same at my previous job.

Many of the funds in 401K are institutional funds and not sold in retail. They do not have ticker symbol. You have to manually update them.

I had the same question about my 401 K ticker. Here is the long reply I received from schwabplan.com
I am sorry for any confusion. The Schwab Managed Retirement Funds are collective trust funds that pool the assets of several qualified retirement plans into one portfolio. They are not mutual funds. They are only available to participants of qualified plans, 401(k) plans, money purchase plans, or profit sharing plans.
Consequently, collective funds offer participants benefits similar to those of mutual funds, such as portfolio diversification, professional management and flexibility. Because collective trust funds do not impose administrative fees, such as those levied to cover the cost of listing the fund?s performance in the newspaper and do not have some of the regulatory requirements and expenses that mutual funds do, they generally have lower operating expenses. History shows that a small reduction in fees can translate into potential accumulations of additional assets over time. Structuring the Schwab Managed Retirement Trust Funds with collective trust funds allows Schwab to offer participants the benefits of active fund management with a very competitive expense ratio.
However, since the underlying funds are collective trust funds, the fund performance cannot be tracked in the newspaper or through services such as Morningstar. However, monthly updates of the Schwab Managed Retirement Trust Fund performance information will be available on schwabplan.com. Therefore, there is also no prospectus available as there is for other investments available. Only the information available on the website is the fund information that is available and this is what would have been mailed as well

I have used this briefly (though I currently use similar service by Fidelity as I have more accounts with them). Many banks like BoA and Citibank also offer similar services. AFAIK, all these institutions use the same software at the back end (from yodlee). microsoft money and quicken etc also use yodlee to pull in your information from hundreds of banks.
the service from yodlee is very reliable and they are quick to fix issues. however, there are small UI kinks in the way vanguard has integrated it in their website (nothing major).

use yodlee

I am using it for last 4+ years. it also helps you analyze networth trend over time.

Where ticker is not available you may use ETF or index funds applicable as benchmark for these funds. Read the objective of the fund and check the benchmark that fund uses.
For analysing the portfolio using "9-box morning star" method, this will help.

Thanks for all the responses. Since there is no ticker symbol for some of these funds, I will use the equivalent index for comparison & analysis.
I am thinking of using Quicken delux to get consolidated view of all investments, income, expenses and cash flows. One option is to provide all of our banking and mutual fund login information, so that it pulls the data (using yodlee) from there.
Wondering if it is safe to do that. all login info available at one place, so it might be dangerous if some how it gets out?
Any good/bad experience with quicken on this regard?

If you have an account with BOA, then it has a my portfolio section which can consolidate all your accounts. It also uses yodlee as a backend engine.
