My 3 year old laptop (Dell E1405) screen flickers and blanks out and the machine goes into standby mode. This issue started a few weeks ago and continues to occur once in 3-4 days. Sometimes the screen only flickers and does not blank out.

Could this be a screen issue or graphics card issue? Any help or pointers will be appreciated.

GN,

This can happen due to
1) Bad Inverter
2) Bad LCD backlight
Your best bet is try replacing inverter which can cost around $25. You can google for photo/video. If it is backlight then you have no option other than changing panel. If panel need replacement I would suggest back up data connecting external monitor and buy another laptop. Though it may sound difficult it is easy to do this.

Dell has a Diagnose program/mode. Look for it when the screen is working. You could also ask the Dell help line. They would guide you to running the Diagnose.

I had the same problem with my Dell inspiron 6000. Even that was out of warranty.
I reinstalled windows on that again. I am not sure if this problem is resolved as I hardly use that laptop now as I got another laptop. If I confirm, I will let you know.
Some times I wish I had bought AAPL. This dell sucks big time. Once out of warranty, even to talk they ask for money.....

I think it may be driver issue. I had an external monitor which was doing same. I reinstalled driver and it is working fine.

To reinstall the driver for the monitor, you need to right click on my computer go to manage, Device manager, Display adopter. And see if you can update the driver from the properties menu of the display which is causing you problem.

Thanks. With AAPL, there'd be another set of problems to deal with I guess, like proprietary battery, memory, and drivers. AAPL is a good stock to own though.:wink

Or you can unscrew the hard disk and using a hard disk enclosure copy the data on to another computer. The hard disk enclosure should not cost more than $20.
