Solar power for regular folks

Hello,
I would appreciate if anyone can share their experience/expertise in utilizing solar power for their daily needs. I hear it is mandatory for new buildings in Bengaluru to have solar water heaters. I also see this practice in many parts of the country.
Other than that what are the other ways to use solar power at home for example to run A/C, Fridge, TV etc. I am not trying to go completely off the grid (dont know if it is even possible at night) but trying to see the many ways I can use solar rather than regular electricity.
I do understand the cost may be higher but it is no barrier at this point.
