There is nothing convincing in the article that retorts what is said in the first article. The main premise for the second article is
[QUOTE]In India, the clan (gotra) has its origin not in the birth of people but derives from the gurus they followed. For example, families belonging to the Bharadwaja gotra are the followers of Bharadwaja Maharishi. But it does not necessarily mean that all its members belong to the same family. Different families in the same caste might have followed Bharadwaja Maharishi; hence so they acquired the name of Bharadwaja gotra.
Where did Mr. ANJANEYALU get this from?

It is unscientific BS, perpetrated by men. :) "The importance of Son in Gotra System" & "Gotra System ? An attempt to protect the Y Chromosome from becoming extinct?" gives it away. To hell with such system. :)
Have them explain the Tulu (Bari) and Malayalee (illam) matrilineal systems of lineage. The Tulu and Malayali males haven't gone extinct. :)

I am sure the Gurus had abilities to carry out complex surgeries and had superfancy labs to know about DNAs and chromosomes.
Can you imagine what levels of scientific achievements they would have had only if they had tubelights in their labs or the clothes or the razor to shave?
Of course, one could argue that these Gurus didn't need to do any actual work to gain such knowledge...all they had to do is take a Samadhi for a long period and that would get them not only knowledge but also children.
---------------------------------
Folks, Gotra system probably made sense a couple of thousand years ago when useless children of these good-for-nothing Gurus tried to sleep with their sisters and cousins. Not anymore.
Trying to find 'science' in silly beliefs is like trying to find hymen in Bollywood. You might find some but that would be totally fabricated.
---------------------------------
Added later: Let me hasten to add that I have nothing against our Gurus or their writings or their beleif system. They did very well and came up with really nice theories and postulations.
They did not lack grey matter (I am not referring to weed) and they did not lack curiosity.
Just don't burden them with something even they wouldn't be comfortable with. They were children of their own time, just like we are of our time.
I can already visualize rishis squrming when their stories get blamed of scientific research.

We are all brothers and sisters.
We are all brothers and sisters.
...
We are all brothers and sisters.
We are a product of orgy and incest!
Damn, I feel jealous of the alpha males, them sapota (7) rishis. What is the population now? :)

Nowadays it has become a fashion to talk against ancient vedic system. No worries. Isn't It the same gurus who talked about the planetary system. Did they have this super fancy telescopes and satellites that time??
How come the modern day scientist are swinging wild to count the number of planets (some times its 8 and some times its 9, according to your modern day scientists).

There is nothing 'vedic' about it. A bunch of intelligent folks scattered thru a several thousand years of history of mankind has produced such great observations. They didn't have powerful telescopes and that is obvious from what they have written.
If you are saying that a few million years ago our rishis were so knowledgeble that they could decipher genetics, then you are wrong.
Again, this is not an attempt to belittle our ancestors, they did quite well for their time.
If you think that our Rishis somehow had eyes more powerful than hubble telescope, then I am sure that you won't ever teach Sanskrit to your kids.
--------------
And about that nowadays. What are you? A million year old? Or you are just saying that in your lifetime you have observed this change? I hope its a latter. People in Guntur and People in San Francisco are going to have different levels of understanding of the world. If you go back to Guntur, you may find people assuming that Sun is a planet and Rahu eats him for breakfast and people in San Francisco may not quite beleive that. This change is NOT due to 'nowadays' but more due to change in company you keep.

Well said Guntur. Gotra or Gomutra.., our ancestors always had scientific reasons for everything they did. Ours was a perfect society until all this greed and western dominance came and destroyed everything. Today, there is no peace anywhere in this world. Everybody wants more.. and more.
