Folks,

I will be going to India in few weeks and would like to take preferably small form factor desktop, I was thinking about buying keyboard, mouse and monitor in India due to luggage restriction. I can check in 1 bag and carry one hand bag.

I was thinking about carrying PC box as hand bag. Has anyone done this? How about the security? I know you can carry laptop but not sure about desktop. What about the customs? Do they allow goods upto certain value free? Is it worth the hassle or I should buy it in India.

If this is not feasible then I'm thinking about taking laptop, same questions about laptop as far far duty goes. Any info you may provide would be greatly appreciated.

If it's TR then your allowed 1 Desktop + 1 Laptop. When I r2i'ed recently, I took this desktop in check-in baggage and 1 Laptop in carry on (No duty -- Chennai Airport). I am suggesting something like XPS one because it's a just a Monitor/Keyboard/Mouse ( No separate CPU) . CPU is built-in along with the monitor.

I believe you are allowed 1 Laptop for travel (see post 179 here) without any duty. Not sure on the customs duty for desktops for travel.

What about if I'm not doing the TR? Are you still allowed to take 1 laptop duty free?

Yes. You can take 1 Laptop duty free during vacation.

As far as I understand this is the way it works.

1 Laptop free of duty during travel / person (vacation). Days of endorsing it on the passport are long gone.

I think Adarsh (Universal)/ Yogesh (21st Century relocations ) might be able to confirm the above and give you more details, if you post it one of the shipping threads.

Why bother Adarsh. I can confirm from personal experience more than once during last five years.

What is ballpark desktop(CPU, monitor, Keyboard, mouse) and Laptop cost in India. I know it will depend upon the bells and whistles but just give me some ballpark range. It is my understanding that desktops cost 22K-25K in India?
