787 is Boeing's first new jet in 16 years, after the 777.

This is most fuel-efficient plane for general aviation built till-date. This is also the first time significant amount of composite materials have been used to build a commercial plane. Also for the first time, sections of this plane will be built all over the world and Boeing will do assembly.

787 is also the most successful plane which was sold before first flight! Boeing reported about ~820 orders pre-launch.

Overall nothing fancy, but this will be just a very economical plane to operate. There are some new passenger-pleasing new features like -1) Bigger windows that are electronically dimmable 2) LED lighting 3) Increased humidity in the cabin than before.

787 is about 3-years late. Hoping to take a flight in it some day. Air India was supposed to get some this year, but the word is that they may cancel/differ their orders because of their financial troubles...
