Yes, every technology has Ritchie's stamp on it. LAMP * the foundation of Web 2.0/3.0 that current technology bell-weathers are riding (Google search engines, facebook , Amazon, Salesforce etc) wouldn't have happened if not for C/Unix.
But always marketing wins over technology like OS2 was mentioning that every technology Steve marketed was first invented in Xerox. But not many remember or acknowledge the original inventors.

LAMP - Linux/Apache/My SQL/Perl or Python

Steve has created products that directly impact millions to whom he is visible.
Ritchie is known to techie folks. Definitely, whoever tasted good bit of C and Unix would remember him.
More the mass... more the hype.

True. When Steve Jobs passed away, almost everybody I knew felt very "sad" and posted on FB. Ritchie's death only drew response from techie folks and mostly those who were familiar with C/Unix. Jobs was known to more people than Ritchie. If people don't know the man, why or how will they mourn him. It is like a popular Bollywood star's passing away vs that of a less known but much more talented theater or regional language artist whose work had a big impact on the acting industry.

I believe that's what the term "the masses" refers to.
