One of Ambhi's favorite raagas is ritigowla. Several popular Tamil songs are in this raaga:

Thanks for starting this thread Ambhi.

My favorite has been Purandara Dasa, the father of Carnatic music.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purandara_Dasa

Not just Carnatic music, he had tremendous influence on Hindustani music too. Tansen's teacher Haridas was Purandara Dasa's student.

Two of my picks from his 1000s of top compositions are:

Jagadodharana about Lord Krishna:

This composition even made to United Nations Music concert, sung by the great Subbulakshmi.

The most famous Hindustani rendering of this maestro of Carnatic music is here. Bhimsen Joshi immortalized the Bhagyada Lakshmi Baramma song.

'Swagatam' song during the CWG Opening Ceremony, sung by Hariharan was also composed with Carnatic music

1. Sidney - this is Vara Veena
-to give you a kickstart into Carnatic territory through modern remixes

2. A very fav strotams,.. which incidentally is sung by MS subbalaxmi and I was wondering whether it should belong to carnatic classical genre or not.

I was surfing the internet for Hamir Kalyani compositions and came across this one by Abinaya Shenbagaraj. This is a Thiruppugazh hymn set to Hamir Kalyani. Wonderful rendition, perfect diction and a smooth voice - it is absolutely mesmerizing to listen to her. The orchestration is equally good. realgoogler;660893Beautiful music. Just play this song for my son when he goes to bed and he is beautifully asleep. This song has inspired many to make their own versions.

The song (Maruvarthai pesathe) in the quoted post took me to Youtube and to the version by Indian Raga. I followed Indian Raga and Mahesh Raghvan which took me to the very talented Sharanya Srinivas. Sharanya is the daughter of singer Srinivas of Minsara Kanna fame from Padayappa. Here is Sharanya's rendering of Swati Tirunal's thillana in Raga Dhanashree with Mahesh Raghvan on GeoShred. Too good!
