I usually travel delta while going to India. Earlier route would be Atlanta - paris – Mumbai. Now the new route is Atlanta- Newyork – Mumbai.

1) I heard one of the latest baggage rule is that
The check in bags, length + breadth + height cannot be more than some 61 or 62 inches. Or else they make you pay a fine of 25 $ / bag.

2) Check in bags cannot weigh more than 50 pounds, earlier it was 70 pounds. Or else again fine.

3) I weighed a check in bag on my home scale in Mumbai. It was just about 49 pounds. I weighed at Mumbai airport and it became 53 pounds, so had to remove some things from my check in bag and make it about 49 pounds. The same bag was weighed again on NY domestic airport and here again it was about 51 pounds. It was an early morning rush and the Delta guy on the counter won’t let me put some more things in my carry on bag bcos of the huge line behind me. Such 4 bags were above 50 punds and I had to pay about 100 $s in fine here at ATL airport.

4) In Mumbai when I put some things from my check in bag into my carry on, I put a steel DABBA containing 2 dozen forks which I realized after checking in my bags. And had to donate those forks as charity to the security in Mumbai.

5) While departing from Atlanta, my carry on bag had an almost new Charlie perfume bottle which I realized after checking in my luggage. And had to donate my charlie to the KALLUS here in ATL airport.

I don't know the latest developments. But, until 6 months back, Singapore Airlines allowed checkin baggage 70 lb and Korean 50 lb. Singapore Airlines is expensive compared to other Airlines but lot of vegetarian passengers like it.

All these rules have been around for quite sometime (esp the liquids and 50 lbs limit). Perhaps you should spend sometime getting familiar with the rules beforehand?

And ... why didn't you check your bags all the way to the destination (ATL) in BOM? This would've ensured that you only have to clear customs in JFK and drop off the bags on the conveyor belt for the next domestic flight (instead of lugging it to the checkin counter).[/quote]

I know 50 lb rule was around for some time. Did u know about the new bag size rule (61-62 inches)? God knows, by the time u & i travel next time, what other new rules they will introduce.

Baggages were requested to check all the way till ATL. But customs happen at the place where u first step in US. And in new york international is one terminal and domestic in another terminal. They said we will have to check in the baggages ourself once we got it back from customs.

Also bcos of flight delay from mumbai due to bad climate in june( Though we got to stay in a Leela Kempinski suite for one night) , we had reached newyork airport when the domestic airport was closed. We had to stand outside the airport door for about 2 hours early in the morning from I think 2:00 to 4:00 AM. The newyork experience was horrible......
