Rote learning - the good, the bad and the ugly.

My views on rote learning and related issues like drill in math have changed over time. Am instinctively against rote and drill, but also see that even in a thinking game like chess, the professionals memorize a lot of stuff. Those who do not will need to spend more time thinking during the game and can make errors.
