Can #MeToo campaign bring the necessary social change ?

Post by RBee »

Now skeletons are coming out from closet after Harvey is outed..Kevin Spacey too had to apologize..
Priyanka spoke about the casting couch in Bollywood

But Not just Hollywood or Bollywood, even Universities are outing who misbehaved with other gender and crossed the work laws..

Can this bring the necessary social change or just a flash-in-the-pan and will remain status-quo ??

Looks like a campaign is going on by "virtuous" women to collect retirement money once they get old by suing for harassments that happened 20/25 yrs ago. It started with Gretchen Carlson.

Most of the people blamed like Cosby, Ailes, Harvey or even Spacey are past their prime and have nothing to lose.

Why all these #MeToo women didn't react immediately? And, why go gungho about this when we have a president who openly declares he grabs women by their pussies?

Just relax. Nothing is changing here! It is just a "Get rich soon" scheme!

When high and mighty and famous are falling like a leaf like GB Sr, Spacey and Mark Hallperin(Game Change), then if not a change, atleast fear would set in!
However in India, the predominant issue is not just the casting couch, but a much larger one from the streets! There even a rape victim has been raped again by the cops whom she went to report! I don't think this will have an impact on India, unless the parents educate their boys ( esp in north ) and police reform!

Whoever started this #MeToo campaign, deserves a huge salute for her bravery to come out! One voice changes the village, and a village changes a town...

What do you expect the law to do? Ask the woman to molest the man in return? Financial implications are one of the key methods to hurt the corporations these people work for. It is a shame that these people were allowed to go on with their ways for decades. If it was just one or two women you could get away with whatever label. When these many women come out together, the message is bound to be heard. For a lot of these women, their encounters would not amount to breaking the law. With a story of walking away from the casting couch, what big money can one expect?

Corporations are not charity institutions to just fund these women. When they are unable to defend the behavior of their creepy men, they have chosen to pay and shut it down, or hush it up. That sends a wrong message to others who may feel too weak to protest. I think this is a defining moment where men in power will learn to behave, or lose it all.

Honestly, I am more shocked at the people in my own inner circle of friends and relatives who are coming out with stories of being groped by their relatives, teachers, holy men, bus conductors, and doctors during their teenage years. They just shut that chapter, and parents hushed it with shame. My own wife shared details of an incident that she had not shared for decades with me. What get rich scheme are they in? More power to the #meToo campaign. It is time the society addresses this important issue.

It is really sad when even educated men think like this..
Women have the double edged sword. If they out those guys in the first encounter, they will not be given opportunities.. If they delay , then they are blamed for not disclosing early..

Kangana recently disclosed (many weeks before this #meToo campaign) in an interview that, a married person from Bollywood (Aditya Pancholi) was involved with her in the early career and she was still a minor . She also said she was involved with another married man (Hrithik Roshan) after his divorce was announced . She also blamed Karan Johar for being the flag bearer of nepotism.. What did they do? One sued her, second one told it is not true because there are no pictures, the last one used his influence to make sure she is not seen in any filmy functions; probably made calls to see she doesn't get future assignments from known media houses..She has just 1-2 films under her belt now and if she disappears from the scene in 2-3 years, it will not be surprise but sad to see talented actress like her get this treatment..

Leave alone these entertainment industry people who make much more money than normal people.. In normal colleges, PhD women students are asked to come in odd hours.. Happened to my university mate when I was doing MS and she was in her second year research.. She left the university as she was afraid to bring her charges against this powerful professor..She didn't complete her PhD.. Wonder how many women like this never disclosed what they went through except with a close confidante :(

Just look at what many Fox women said when she went to higher ups about Bill O Reilly, they just shrugged and said he is their rain maker! They viewed any abuse reporting from Megyn Kelly, Gretchen as mere nuisance and tried to hush it, till it came out in evil New York Times!
Fox even was trying to bring OReilly back, till another damning payout came out!

When was Gretchen Carlson harassed by Roger Ailes? In 2015, she wrote in her memoir "“the most accessible boss I’ve ever worked for,” “brilliant,” and “razor sharp,” adding, “we seemed to have a real connection.” https://www.thedailybeast.com/fox-news-women-roger-ailes-asked-to-see-my-underwear-if-i-was-single-and-more
Subsequently, she walked off with 20 million and started writing books and crusader against sexual harassment.
Megyn Kelly also mentions now after Ailes was fired that she was harassed long back.

And Gretchen's case was in 2016, well before the #MeToo campaign. The settlement amount is left to the legal system. I am sure Fox had the best of their lawyers defend Roger Ailes. If you are implying that these women volunteer to get harassed, only to win lawsuits at a later time, I disagree. Even if there are a few women who are successful in winning big money, the vast majority of women do get harassed at their work places, and the men getaway with it. The #MeToo campaign is about giving a voice to such women, and not about the men, or the financial implications to their corporations. When the women decide to come out, feel safe to come out, and how they come out is completely left to them. A lot of them never do, because of victim blaming.
The big question here should be - Is Roger Ailes guilty of sexual harassment? Not the settlement. If she uses the settlement to shed light to what goes on at Fox - more power to her. I don't care much for Fox or the people who work there.

I do not want to dwell on the Fox settlements. We have a society where a 93 year old man in a wheel chair cannot stop himself from grabbing the women he sees. IMHO, it is because of the current sentiment of support for such women, we now see them with the courage to go against a ex-President who is otherwise well respected. If we want a better world for our daughters (future), this needs to change. We cannot change anything if we keep hushing things, and go on with victim blaming.

RBee, My opinion is that #metoo campaign will fade away just like ice bucket campaigns and other campaigns and these (s)exploitation will continue by the rich and powerful.
