We are planning to relocate back to India by early June. My son will be going to 6th grade and daughter in 4th grade. They are both very good in speaking Hindi. However, both have never learned to read or write in Hindi. Both of them will be going to a school in Lucknow (that's where my wife is from) till I find a job. My job could be in Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad or Pune. Question/ Dilemma that we have is how will we handle Hindi classes in Indian schools? We know there are others with kids who've moved back to India and would like to get their opinion or feedback. Is this a big concern and how have they tackled it.

If your kids can talk and understand Hindi, it shouldn't be too difficult to teach them read and write.
In any case, learning Hindi as a language as part of curriculum is easy. If I am right, the schools don't go too deep, just the read and write is enough IMO.
Take my opinion with pinch of salt and hopefully parents who are R2Ied will have more clear Idea.

OP,
By 4th and 6th grade, Hindi will be at a higher level in the northern cities like Lucknow. Get some home tutor asap and teach them to read and write the language. I remember the fat NCERT Hindi books during my 4th grade in Delhi and it was not easy.

I agree. At tis age, Hindi is not going to be easy. Other R2I ed parents can give a better answer for this. You can start preparing them starting with letters.
Tutor can also help for a structured approach in india.
If you can , meybe get a waiver for Hindi from school till the kids get adjusted to new environment.
I think it can be a challenge in Lukhnow. Are there any international school there? then you can find out from there.

There are no international schools in Lucknow. However, the school that the kids would be going to follows American standard of education and is run by a family friend. So, the admissions would not be a problem, plus it gives them a soft landing into a different education system till we settle on the final destination. We've already started getting them familiarized with Hindi letters. We will look into getting a waiver for Hindi from the school - that is a good suggestion....
