Okay, this is intended to be a light thread. So, go easy and don't fight or philosophize. Save it for some other thread. :)

My son is graduating from 4th grade (yeah, a big deal for him) and we have been having lighthearted discussions on what he wants to be.

1. When do you have such discussions with your kid?
2. What does your kid wish to be?
3. What do you wish of your kid?

My answers:
1. We plan on having it at regular checkpoints. We refer back to past wishes and laugh about it. I think that the kids will firm up their options once they are a sophomore at High School, probably influenced by the graduating class.

2. The last conversation, he wished to join the FBI. Prior to that it was CIA, but after watching Body of Lies where Leonardo undergoes torture, he chickened out. :) Prior to that, he wished to be a Marine Biologist (which he still is interested in).

3. I have been trying to influence him to qualify for West Point when he grows up. :)

This is how my kid progressed.

1.Mommy - when she was mommy's little princess
2.Baby sitter - while going to day care
3.Vet- when she was dreaming of having one pet
4.Teacher - When she started school
5.Cow Boy(girl)Horse rider- She is so fond of ponies ever since she was kid and wanted to have horse pet and I said NO.

Nowadys she is setting with teacher, sits on high chair with high heels and reads books to class!

I tell her that chose any one that gives enough money to live a happy, comfortable life:)

1. I hate asking this question to my kid. As a kid I have unpleasant memories of unknown guests asking me what I wanted to be when I grow up.

However, my wife loves regularly interrogating our child about his ambitions.

2
First he wanted to be a Train Engine driver.
Now he wants to be a Paleontologists.
He talks about dinosaurs ALL the time...in recent past Sharks (of 100 different types), tortoises, Hippos and oter animals have caught his imagination.

3.
Personally, I am waiting for the day (after he turns 21) when he says that he wants to run for a local public office.

Personally, I wouldn't worry till the day the kid gets the idea of becoming a ladies tailor . But, there is no way to find that out than wait until they join r2iclubforum and share their real wishes and how they lied to their dad.

Ditto over here. Wifey trying to "influence" kids to become doctors!

My oldest's dreams have ranged from wanting to be a school-bus driver, to mail-delivery-person to an artist - since she loves painting. Her latest is to become a paleontologist much to my wife's chagrin.

The younger one on the other hand, wants to become a teacher and a mommy!!! :))

My kid has the following options in the order he wants:

1. Race car driver - Not a bad option. Wife though, thinks too much about it and discourages as it as she thinks its too risky and a dangerous profession to have

2. Dump truck/garbage truck driver - Well, the good thing is that i don't need to save for his education! :)

3. Daddy - He wants to be like me when he grows up. Again, the good thing is that i don't need to save for his education. R2iClub, be ready for PG Jr. soon!

Nice thread..:)
Well, let me admit I am guilty of influencing my older one..:)..She is almost 6 now..and she says she wants to become a doctor first and then a mommy..:))

She says she wants to help sick people get better..:)

I have influenced her only in the former (doctor), but its funny- don't know how she got it in her head, but she stresses it is doctor first and then mommy..I must says it works very well with me..:)

1. When do you have such discussions with your kid?
Whenever those pesky projects on "When I grow up" or "Your favorite community helper" come home from school. : ) Seriously, the topic comes up when we read something in a kid's magazine, or when we talk about the "economy" - my older kid's current favorite topic.

2. What does your kid wish to be?
An author is always on the wish-list. Sometimes she is torn between that and illustrator, fortune teller, teacher, park ranger. I once felt so bad at her being torn, told her she could be more than one. Skipped mentioning that both might not be paying jobs. : )

3. What do you wish of your kid?
Highly paid author.

(Will post my other kid's dream job in another thread).

My older one has the following wishes:
1. Tow truck driver ( he is fascinated by how a truck can carry another vehicle)
2. Vet (loves animals)
3. CEO (he just recently learnt what that means, and loves the idea that he will be #1 in a company and boss around everyone. I am not complaining :) )
