My mom will be coming in couple of months for my delivery. She had been asking me for list of things that she could buy from there for the baby.
I think certain things are very good in India than here. Can experienced parents share their list as what can be got from India and what's better to buy here in USA
Thanks much
Suj

Poushtik laddoo's ( I do not know what they are called in other parts of the world ) for the mother to be ;-), my wife loved those, that apart I cannot think of anything. Maybe some of those ayurvedic massage oils and someone to do the baby massage but I am thinking your mom is going to handle that department.

If you know the baby's gender, maybe Indian clothes for up to 12 months or 18 months size. I liked the summery sleeveless frocks I got from India for my girl. For the really hot days, when the baby needs to be left in just a diaper, those worked better than the onesies. Most of the clothes though will be just useful to take cute pictures in.
I think most things are better bought in the U.S., and you will have to really rack your brains to come up with a list!

when my MIL came to help us with our first one..she carried loads of clothes for our son, Kesar (

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kala_Namak) Some ayurvedic medicines for cold etc., I think she also carried some small toys like rattle...but anyway my son didn't play with them till he was atleast 6 months. Also, she carried lot of receiving blankets from India (though I thought we had better one available in US)
In my opinion, more than what she brings for the baby..its important that she carry things which will make her comfortable here. My MIL had big trouble finding few things which she was used to in India...I had to drive her 200 miles to Chicago to visit Devon street to get what she wanted. Not fun ...

Gripe water =Sugar+water. We, desis still fall for that old "gripe" water ad.. And hot water bottle is 5bucks in any pharmacy.
OP, Bear in mind that it's customary in India for the new mother to be advised total rest, eat lot of ghee to become "healthy". So most end up "mota" healthy. :-)

SUJ, seriously ask your mother to get groceries from India if she has unused baggage allowance. Indian groceries have become way too expensive here in US and it mayn't be a bad idea at all to do that. That's what I told my wife to do who is in India now. All the other stuff for mom and new born you can get here and better as well.

Gripe water is not just water + sugar..It has essential oils like Fennel and Dill too (for preventing flatulence) and major component of it is alcohol because of which some doctors do not recommend it:)

Honestly, we had not asked anyone to send/bring anything from India, and didn't really miss anything, or felt that anything was so special that we couldn't do without, even of the few things brought by parents, some were never even used, many of the things used/done in India, may or may not be allowed in US, as per the pediatricians, and we preferred to follow the pedi's advice here on everything, so didn't miss anything, to each their own, there may be some things that are good, but nothing that is must have, imo.
