Hello:

Can someone tell me the process for registering US Born kids (1 PIO holder and another has Indian Visa) here in Bangalore? I sent an email to US Consulate Chennai and got the reply that I can register through online.

Should I also goto nearby police station and do the registration?

Appreciate any inputs.

Thanks

Way back in 2003 when we were in India for around 10 months, I did the registration for my US born then 2-year-old, online and took a printout of the registration receipt and saved with my records. Later on that year, when we came back to the US, we were asked for the registration details at the airport in Hyderabad and although the immigration officials seemed unaware of the online registration process, they were satisfied with the printout that I provided and let us go.

Hope this helps. However, I'm not sure if the online registration process is still available or has been revamped over the years.

I believe that a PIO holder has to report to Indian authority if the stay will be more than 180 days. This has nothing to do with registering in US consulate. I don't think that the India passport holder has to report to Indian authorities.
Where to report depends on where you are located in India.

You could apply for OCI in India and get it in 6-8 weeks, then you don't have to report to the Indian authority.
You can find more/correct details here:

See parts 7, 9 etc.

(This one gives good info; also says that it is not required to register with indian authority for children below 16 years.)

Thank you both of you. Yes the online registration (with US COnsulate) is available.

OCI: In my case I cannot apply for OCI, for my kids, because both myself and wife are Indian Citizens.

thx

My kids have OCI card. It's a life long visa, as both me and my wife born in India.
I am a bit puzzled with answer to qn 1 on the link.

  • Children below 16 years of age do not require Registration, on any type of VISA
