Hi,

Does any one have experience in adopting a baby from India and bringing her to US? I have applied for I485 few months back.

Can I get depend visa for the baby? Any information will be really helpful.

Thanks
Saran

Thanks to Desi and rahulk for the informations, it seems I can't adopt until I'm in US (planning to R2I in 2-3 years).

You can adopt while in US. Just give yourself 12-24 months for the baby to land in your home at US.

Also, note that adopting after you go back to India won't be any different, if you take up USC.

Even with GC, you will have to wait in India for months, if not years.

....and it will cost you anywhere from 15 - 20 K if you adopt while you are in the US. Not sure how much it will cost if you are in India.

OP,

I talked to an adoption agency and they told me that

1. It is very difficult to go for adoption without USC (cause of the visa) and it will cost you a lot of time and money.

2. If you in India then it is much easier (couple of months, lot of agencies to choose from) and not that costly.

If you are in India, as a GC or USC, then you are treated just like you are in US. You wil spend the same tens of thousands of $ and also wait in line behind 'resident' Indians (INC).

can someone elaborate on this 15k-20k cost? have some one been thru this?
where we need to spend this money? who charges it? is it some kind of donation?
Also if u find a baby urself for adoption then is it possible to go ahead with adoption or we have to go thru with an adoption agency only.

Here are the steps you need to take if you are considering an 'inter-country' adoption. From what I know, all GCs & USCs irrespective of where they are living (India or US), will fall under this category. I don't know about USC and OCI.

Most cost estimates I have seen are in the range of $12K to $20K. Here is a sample breakdown of costs. A good portion is travel related.
