Hi,

I have decided to move back to India by the end of next month after 9 years of stay in US. Bought the tickets already. GC is in process but cannot wait anymore. Its stifling my long term career prospects. Wife is already in India working.

Currently working for a Hedge Fund in NY as an analyst for 4.5 years. I have an MBA in finance (tier 2 school in US) and a CFA charterholder. I have 7 years of experience in Finance Industry (all in US) and 3 years in India (before i moved to US) as a software engineer. Haven't started looking for a job yet but will start doing in few days.

I have been following this forum for a while but haven't come across a similar profile. Most of the profiles hear are with IT background. Can anyone with similar profile or having acquaintances with similar profile respond. I would like to know how much can i expect with this profile. Currently earning six figures. I know that networking is the best way to find a job early. I will be tapping the CFA charterholders in India. I was wondering if there was any specific websites that people use in india to find jobs in Asset Management/Portfolio Management/Private Equity like iimjobs.com. Naukari.com or monster.com do not seem to fit the bill.

Any leads will be highly appreciated.

Regards

Financial services recruitment in India is sustantially dominated by Cosultants. Which city do you intend to go back to ? This industry is largely based in Mumbai - Very difficult to find a meaningful job outside Mumbai, unless you are open to working in offshore centres/back offices. Are you in the equity side or the fixed income side ?

I think private equity type jobs are few and far between in India, and the few that are there would be at a handful of banks/asset management firms in Mumbai, mostly overseas based. My feeling is that anybody at these jobs have entered through the Indian system from level zero through campus recruiting, etc.

But if finances/risk tolerance permit, I do think there are interesting opportunities in India for entrepeneurs. Like other emerging markets there are plenty of inefficiencies in pricing and distribution of basic commodities.

I have in some ways a similar profile as you and would be interested (if you have time of course) to hear your thoughts on the transition to Indian financial services. Given that i cover the hedge fund space (from a Fof perspective) i am aware that there are a few (say 40-50) truly institutional shops in India (primarily long only equity) based mostly in Bombay.

Ps; - I intend on making the transition myself shortly to India!

Sure oasis138. i have all the time in the world :-)) Started slacking a bit at work. Blame it on a mix of excitement and apprehension about moving to India after so long :-)) I see you are from chicago. I was in Chicago for 4.5 years. Did my MS and MBA in UIC.

Anyways, I work for a fixed income shop mainly dealing in convertible bonds and hence we do analyze both the FI side and Equity side.

avasanth, I am willing to locate anywhere as long as the job satisfies my requirements. Mumbai will be of first choice tough. I do not intend to work for back office or middle office. keeping my fingers crossed.

investorvinay, i agree, private equity jobs are few and far between in india. Most of them probably are picked up by IIM guys which is fair enough. I have seen a lot of private equity jobs in real estate sector springing up.

Given that the FI market in India is still at its nascent stage, jobs and careers can be built.

I am excited to see some profiles similar to mine hear. Let?s get the discussion rolling guys. Has anyone tried sending unsolicited emails to MDs, Heads etc? I have access to Bloomberg and Bloomberg India news where the heads/portfolio managers of different financial institutes are quoted. Bloomberg has the email address and phone numbers of these people and I intend to use it. Any suggestions of not using it

Yes been in Chicago for some time now.. so you are a convert arb guy...I know that a lot of Indian firms have been issuers of convertible debt (a lot denominated in usd) so sure that's soemthing which might not be as limited as FI is in general in India... I happen to be involved with FI side as well (more so as long biased distressed, RV credit and short only products - again from a fof perspective not like you where one makes direct investments).

I have been slowly chatting with folks back home (bro in law happens to be a sell side analyst at DB and dad happens to be dealing with a lot of PE shops for his firm's funding requirements)....bro in law is relatively junior but provides a good read on how the Fin services scene is in India especially when it comes to dealing with the dealers and clients alike..

My initial read - I guess networking is the name of the game (no surprises there)...
.I guess do you manage a team or work more solo??? I'll look in my database for Indian centric convert arb shops and maybe you can drop them a line or two.

Couldn't agree more with this line "Given that the FI market in India is still at its nascent stage, jobs and careers can be built."

sbukit1,

I am not in any position to help you. But I need some advice on CFA - Finance career. Long story short - I am in IT (10 years experience), did my part time MBA (UT-Austin), got offers, but were taken back bcoz of visa/GC. My current plan is to do CFA. But I am not sure of the road ahead. I am unable to send you private messages for some reason. Would greatly appreciate if you could lend some time to discuss over phone/email (however you prefer).

I am in a group of analyst but mostly work on projects on solo basis. I would love to have a list of convertible funds in india. Thanks much oasis138.

You said you intend to move to india. Have you decided a date? Are you planing to leave the job and then move or wait for an opportunity hear in US and then decide. Having read this forum and applying common sense, it makes total sense to be in india and look for jobs. Obviously give it a shot form US and if it works then nothing like it. I have 1.5 months left in US and will start looking from this weekend.

Its certainly does impart you knowledge to an extent where you can talk knowledgeably on Finance,Economics,Accounting etc. So for that perspective its definitely a good option. It will definitely help you advance your career. Let me know what specific concerns/questions i can address.
