Your friend is coming from a product development company to a service company like Wipro, TCS? I want to hear what other experts on the forum have to say, but feel that the compensation is very low for his experience.

Thanks a lot. My buddy was working with services (satyam) and moved to a prod company (in US) during satyam melt down. He is R2I in May 2011. This offer is from Cognizant , Pune :-( . He wanted to be in Services. How much he can look for?

Iam not sure about Pune .. but these days it seems 2 to 2.5 lakhs per year ... to atleast 20 lakhs is what your friend should expect :)

A lot depends on the quality of product company he is coming from. There's a wide variation in quality across the product development industry - so, not all product companies add the same value to one's resume.

One way to roughly estimate the quality of the product company would be to look at your friend's US salary and compare it with what is offered at other product companies in US for similar experience.

Cognizant gives hefty bonuses. This year the average bonus is 165% with top performers getting 200% bonus.
So, on a base salary of Rs. 12 lakhs, your friend can expect a bonus of Rs. 20 lakhs, which would bring his total compensation to Rs. 32 lakhs.
This is quite a good salary.

^^:). You are assuming that bonus= base salary. So as per your calculation the person was expected to get 24 Lacs anyways with 100% bonus payout.

The bonus is a percentage of base salary and unless you are in top management roles its always a fraction of base.

Usually companies use the % to mean a proportion of their target bonus, not proportion of base/fixed pay. Below is an extract from an article from ET --
"The top performers have got in excess of 200% of the target performance bonus payout, while the average payout is over 165%. "
Article at http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/news/news-by-industry/jobs/cognizant-doles-out-bonuses-of-up-to-200-to-employees/articleshow/7705979.cms

For OP, I would take this to mean that the 1.5L target bonus included in CTC would have ended up being being ~2.5L this year.
