A job related dilemma even before I R2I

An U.S MNC contacted me for a job in India( I don't know how they got my resume).I am a hands on Project Lead/Architect doing part time Project Management.I also got my PMP certification last year.

They have short listed me for a Technical Project Management Position and scheduled a face to face next week. I already had a phone screen and the interview was purely project Management principles.

What I had thought I would like to do when I R2I would be more on the role of a development Manager or on those lines..

When I spoke to the company recruiter( she called from India) she did mention there was another position of a development manager.

I guess I am reaching out to the community of R2Iers to garner what they might do faced with a similar situation. Should I just attend the interview and then discuss what I think I want to be doing or talk to the recruiter up front and then they may change their mind about interviewing me al together.

Would having a job offer on hand even though it is not the ideal job be a better situation than R2I without an offer.

I would definately talk to them and if the pay is good start with the Tech Lead position, Also based on my recent experiences with recruiters, I got the feeling that a Technical Lead/PM is paid more than a development manager, assuming that the development manager's job is purely coordination work.

I am also planning on getting my PMP cert. Any tips on how to go about it and can you recommend any books and has the cert helped you in your career search.

One of the criteria for PMP certification is the proof of 35 contact hours. I had had training during working but I didn't have like a certificate, so I took a Project Management class that would give me the 35 hours. The class was geared for certification. We followed the PMBOK ( Project Management Book of Knowledge) from PMI and PMP Exam Prep (4th Edition) (Paperback)
by Rita Mulcahy.
The class helped supplement the books as one can discuss it out with others in the class.

I was in india during march of this year and sent out my resume to some head hunters before I got to India, say in Feb or so. Only one of them contacted me the day before I was leaving and nothing came out from that. This is the only company that has contacted be and it seems they are interested because of the certification.

An aside , I had interviewed with an investment bank in the US before I visited india and they were interested because of PMP.

What kind of proof would they need, can my manager vouch for my PM experience ? Also can you tell me a bit about the Project Management class you took to be eligible for the PMP cert, course content and where is it being offered etc. Are you talking about the PMP prep course ?

Thanks

You have to put your experience for 4500 hrs as proof that you have managed projects.
Second is that you have taken a formal project management education for 35 hours. If have project related training on the job and have certificates or transcripts to prove it, then you don't need to take the class.

The class helps in training to think like a PM under the PMI guidelines which are in the PMBOK.

I took the class in NYC. I would not recommend them but interacting with others helped, also the homeworks and the class quizzes help you to study for the exam

I am also planning to get the PMP certification this year. Yes you would need 35 contact hours and 4500 hours of PM experience before you can take the exam. I put some of my plans for certification on my blog at http://r2i2010.blogspot.com, check it out if you are interested.
