Hi folks,

Could'nt find any thread with the information I am looking for. What is the dress code for interviews in India these days for men ? Just asking since I've been away from the Indian job scene for a long time. Do people wear a suit to an interview these days like the US or is a decent combination of dress slacks + full sleeved shirt + tie still the norm ?

Go with a Full SUit / Tie. You can always remove the outercoat and carry it in hand. This is what I did. In Chennai it was so hot during June I could'nt wear it.
The Interviewer (AVP) was in business casual with no tie.

Actually they do not care much if you wear a suit or not. Business causal would do. I did attend a lot of interviews and i used to wear a suit initially but after a while I gave up.

On another note be prepared to be grilled royally and sometimes by a guy much younger than you.

My 2 cents....

A full hand plain or professional looking shirt + pant + shoes is all that is needed and expected from you. Nothing much. From my personal experience a suit or tie is not needed. You can add a tie if you want but not needed.

In I.T, wearing a Tie is "overdressing". Forget the Suit....

Brown Khakis and plain blue oxford slacks with a brown/black shoes always worked for me.

For top management positions, a suit looks very professional. Youl will be in airconditioned surroudings right from the airport onwards - so the heat is not an issue. If you are in such a slot, you may be interacting with US guys a lot. So from the company's perspective, they get a sense of how you look to their US colleagues or clients.

For middle management or other positions, you may need at least a cotton white or light blue shirt, a dark silk tie and woolen charcoal grey trousers with well polished shoes. Avoid polyester in shirts, ties or slacks. They look cheap. Wool is an appropriate wear in any weather contrary to popular opinion.

In general, no one will penalize you for being better dressed than the requirements. Even if you go with a suit for a middle management position, you won't hurt your chances.

Kaiser: This makes me even more determined to get a job here and then make a intra-company move. Considering the fact that how unprofessional we desi's are when it comes to interviewing people, it scares the hell out of me to interview in Des.

I fail to see the point in this one and don't want to jump to wrong inferences not knowing what you implied.

Age shouldn't matter. I know much smarter people younger to me. I know much senior people worse than me. There's a good likelihood your interviewers are much younger because of the rapid growth in the industry here, lot of young people are at the helm of things.

Grilling royally could mean test of depth of your knowledge. Nothing to be scared about IMO. If it is outside the scope of your job role, just point it out. If the interviewer doesn't stop the line of questioning, just step out or keep stonewalling and raise the concern. It is better you run into these people initially so you know where to join and where not to. You don't wanna be discovering a hell after joining.

#8 has the best reply. Dress code depends on the position.
If it is a senior position; wear a suit. First impressions still count.
