returning your PC after working for US firm.

Friends,

My company has asked me to work from India for 3 months. After knowledge transfer I will be leaving US employer. I will be carrying their laptop with me to work. My question is, have any of you shipped laptop or PC from India to PC? While I can use a courier, can someone please share your experience, if you have gone through?

My wife used to work for a U.S based company when we R2I'ed, at the end of her contract period, she shipped her laptop via Fedex. There are a couple of forms that need to be filled out. They come and pick it up and take care of the rest. There were no hassles at all and it reached the other end safely as well.

Couriering a laptop half way across the world sounds like a proposition as expensive as the laptop itself.
Also there could be your company's confidential data on it, and what if it get's lost in transit and lands into wrong hands? Remember, simple data delete procedures in Windows aren't totally secure. Unless you format the hard drive itself there is no guarantee that the data has been completely wiped out.

Talk to your company about these costs and risks involved - maybe they'll just let you keep the laptop. :emsmilep:

Thanks for both responses.

I think the problem is, laptops are capital assets and people are nervous on just giving it since accounting (like depreciation) is involved. Good point about data, I will just encrypt the data.

I think Fedex is a good idea as long as company pays for it.

my wife works for ibm and she has shipped her laptop back and forth a few times, apart from this one time when she had to pay 200 $ in import duty coz of a customs snafu, it was ok, its pretty safe, i would send my own laptop in a heartbeat.

I tried sending my laptop today and local FedEx guy said I need to get dummy I.E.code from Asst Commissioner Customers, in Bangalore. He says this is recent and due to terrorism concerns.

Does any of you need to do this? How easy or difficult to deal with customs to get this dummy code? I live in Bangalore.
