Oh..the privileges of being a MP

I just learnt - you can just about throw a privilege motion for anything; even if the dog next door barks one too many times.

We common folks have to deal with just shame when we are deplaned for causing ruckus on the flight. But not this MP - he wants to start a privilege motion against the Pilot. Just what did we elect these bozos for?

Will you guys please elect me as an MP? The next time I dont like anyone's post on the R2IClub, I will start a privilege motion against him.

He is a Rajya Sabha MP - Kerala MLAs voted for him.

Rajya Sabha Chairman, who is also VP, will likely advise the MP that privilege motion cannot be invoked for such things.

Am glad the pilot showed some guts. Also, it appears that India passengers are openly protesting flights that are delayed on account of politicians. Good signs. Credibility of politicians is so low that public will tend to think passengers are correct, even if politician was not responsible :)

I was watching the video on CNN IBN the MP called the pilot a ?glorified driver? these guys really know how to insult people.

Well, Pilot IS a glorified driver...driving a huge bus called Airbus!!!
Probably Auto drivers on Pune street need more skills than pilots.

What bothers me is that Indian politicians spend a little too much time politicking!!!

It is like Mahabharat...everybody is fighting for their own crown, to prove their skills and for so called 'atmasanman'...rarely the ruling class think that public is important....so we had a society that was full of great warrirors and kshatriyas and Brahmins but general public never had an opportunity to anything worthwhile.

The situation has not changed much...our MLA and MPs are more interested in getting promoted to ministership...and numbers game rules and most important politician is the one who can lure other elected politicians to his party.

Do politicians even understand their responsibility towards public that elect them???

But public doesn't care much for politicians...I am sure any pretty starlet can give great fight to the biggest of the politician!!!

I have been on a flight that was delayed for a few minutes to let Shah Rukh Khan get on board and nobody seemed to mind.

From what I gather, the MP was actually at the airport even before the flight landed, but was ecorted out of the VIP lounge a little late by the airport manager etc. Also, I am not sure how arguing with the politician and insisting that he deplane on an already delayed flight was in the passenger interest as claimed by the pilot.

Neither Air India nor Indian politicians have ever crowned themselves in glory regarding professionalism, punctuality or courtesy, so it is hard to take sides since I am biased against both of them.

Well said restlessdesi, both are evils. But I am biased in favour of the lesser evil - Air India :)

Why does the rich NRI MP needs to be escorted? Why couldn't he walk on his own?

I think we might be speculating here. I haven't been to the VIP lounge in Kozhikode but I would doubt that the lounge contains any real time arrival/departure info. Or perhaps he needed to be escorted due to security issues.

Personally I would cut some slack to the guy for showing up at the airport before the flight landed, I doubt that the lounge at Kozhikode is enticing enough for him to delay his departure and stall the aircraft. Normally I would have sided with anyone against our politician, but if its Air India staff then I have to start wondering. Historically, 'passenger interest' has been very low on the priority list of Air India staff. I think that the pilot was just ranting at the Duty Manager and when the MP intervened, he decided to show him up.

I hope that either the pilot or the mp is disciplined because neither care about the 'aam aadmi' normally.

Good argument.

Based on news reports and my own prejudices, it appeared to me that the MP was wrong.

Now, I'm willing to consider that he *may* not have been entirely at fault here. Perhaps he was following protocol as you have suggested.

The MP to his credit did not get into an argument w/ the pilot off the bat and got off the plane w/o trying to throw his weight around.

He however should not have insulted the vocation of the pilot. Perhaps the MP did that in the heat off the moment. IMO, he should applogise to the pilot for insulting him and allow an inquiry to decide whether the MP or the airport mgr was wrong in arriving late to board the plane.
