Cable / DSL Options

Hi All

Last time when I visited India, I had a temporary cable connections with BSNL and they charged an additional fee for any data downloads over 2GB per month. Do we have DSL plans with unlimited data transfer option in India.

I did see some unlimited data plans for about 5k a month :(. Search for business plans. Unfortunately, most of the unlimited data plans were capped at 512Kbps :(.

If you really want 2Mbps + unlimited data, you should be looking at data plans.

I wish someone in Bangalore / Chennai who WFH a lot and uses a high speed plan posts their experiences to this thread.

I pay 3600 + 12.36 % of service tax for a 1 MBPS unlimited plan from Tata Indicom. I have heard really bad things about TI, but in the area where I live there is no other choice but them. So far, I am keeping my fingers crossed.

Is this in Bangalore? So in effect you are paying 3x for 1/6th peak bandwidth :(.

Yes, this is in Bangalore. We pay more than twice of what we used to pay Comcast for a much better high-speed Internet experience back in the US.

Who said telecom revolution has taken place in India?

I am not from Bangalore or Chennai but I do work from home every weeknight (working remotely for my US employer), download tons of data, use VOIP every night.

In my one year of WFH experience I tried all local ISPs and BSNL is the best. For me reliability is more important than the speed itself. BSNL ALONE provided that reliability. Never went down at all in one year. Speed is reasonably good. I do get 2MBPS most of the time. I typically download files in the 1GB range.

I have the BSNL HomePlan 3300 (20GB per month, 2MBPS speed) and it is meeting all of my requirements.

Can you tell me what brand and model modem do you use for connecting with BSNL?

I have used multiple modems without any problems with the connection itself.

Huawei MT880 (provided by BSNL)
UT Starcom 300R (provided by BSNL)
DLink ADSL+Router GLB-502T (personally bought it)
I have modified the settings in these modems so that my internet connection is "always on" (as long as the modem is on) without having to login through my computer.

I have the modem first go to my VOIP router and from there to my computer. This is to ensure that voice gets priority over data. I know I could do the same thing through my VOIP settings but I personally prefer to connect the modem to the VOIP router.

I have an inverter at home that will automatically turn-on in case of a power outage. With Huawei and UT Starcom modems there is no loss of connection when power switches from the mains to the inverter (and back). I could be on the VOIP phone and the switchover could be so smooth that the other end would not even know that I had a power outage.

With DLink, when there is power outage, the switch over is smooth but when the power comes back (then switching from inverter to the mains), I lose the Internet connection. I initially thought this as an inverter malfunction but it appears more of the DLink issue. Anyway, I am not worried because I will have time to warn the other party that the connection could be lost. Also, power outages in my city seem to be very rare anyway.

Can anyone post what is a reliable service in Chennai? Is BSNL in chennai as good as in Vizag? I am planning on working ~2-3 months from India later this year and will be VPN into my work and also using VOIP for conference calls.

Guys, I'm in the same situation as IndianByDefault. Please let us know what is the best way to work from India for a couple of months.
