since you invoked periyar, i'm pretty sure you'll agree with his analysis of tamilians too. He called Tamil a barbaric language and tamilians as barbarians. In the Hogenakkal thread you were arguing with Tejasvee on Periyar. this should be an eye opener for you

I don't even need to go thro' the links. I feel tamilians are barbarians in some aspects. I tell that to my friends and family. If Periyar said so, it echoes with my view.

One should see the context at which Periyar said Tamils are barbarians. Look at the picture in the following link. Does it look civil or barbarian? It is very much prevalent in TN villages and towns.

Once I sneaked out at midnight to the Sudalaimadan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudalai_Madan temple festival near my place when I was a kid (my parents don't allow me to go there at midnight). There what I saw was somebody possessed by the god was sucking the blood from the throat of live pigs, while jumping up and down wearing shorts. The entire crowd is cheering that with some strange lulululu sound with their tongue (reminds me of Indiana Jones in Africa). This is done even today with great fanfare and attendance. What do you expect a rational person to say about these people when he sees it? When I brought this kind of worship in another thread tejasvee mentioned that these are non vedic gods. Then I read some vedic references provided by tejasvee and animal sacrifice is described in a more gross way in vedas. The most revered Tiruchendur temple offering includes piercing sharp metal weapons all over the body.

There is nothing wrong in criticizing anyone for what it is due, in my opinion.

In your last link that person says "'I could not help viewing Periyar's uncivilised and barbarous attacks upon my chosen Gods and Goddesses and my own Hindu faith as wanton attacks on my dear and sacred mother who begot me. " Periyar was against superstitions and rituals and he pissed off some people. That is well known.

The author in the first link and last link are the same and the links have religious motivation. The profile of the authors of the links you posted cannot be dismissed.

I'm pretty sure there is also a good reason to call tamil a barbaric language. Or did he just mean language of barbarians. May be the "lululul" sound scared Periyar too....

You suggestion did not escape my consideration. Layman's post along w/ other posts in the "Hogenakkal" thread were also considered as potential OPs for this thread.

Layman's response to Hanu, 98 in the No marks for merit thread, is about reservation.

The only direct reference to Periyar's name in Layman's post is the URL - which is only a pointer to the excerpt from that link.

Layman's post/excerpt does not divert or change the focus of the discussion to Periyar entirely.

Of all the posts, the OP in this thread provided the best logical point for a new thread on Periyar.

I'm not sure in which context or w/ what intent Periyar used the word -"barbaric" to describe Tamil.

I haven't read about Periyar yet, and I'm expecting to find a good reason.

It would be disappointing (and merely sensationalistic) if some one who is held in high regards by a large number of people were to indulge in deliberately maligning a language/culture w/o rationale.

Periyar is widely regarded w/ admiration in TN inspite of his comments. There ought to be a good enough reason for that?

No matter what Periyar's reasoning is, I for one will not agree w/ his view, as I understand it by reading his sentence.

Tamil is a classical language by definition. My interest is piqued because the "Barbaric" statement was made by a Tamil stalwart.

I'm hoping that this thread will educate us about Periyar - the man, his views, his accomplishements and his faults.
