modus_vivendi;289706 Dowry is still given and taken in many urban and well-to-do Hindu families - what do the young boys and girls do about it - not much.
Whats wrong with dowry?

The "item" it procures for the girl is often not worth it.

Its nothing but girls' share of father's wealth. Choice of improper groom can be with or without dowry.

Problem is when groom thinks that it is his entitlement.

Is it really???? Then why does the boy's side get it on the girl's behalf, and tht too at the time of her marraige??? Usually property shares are given after the parents' passing....

You seem to be confused between gift/inheritance and dowry. Dowry, as it is widely known, is not gift/inheritance.

jupiter_009;289729What about when brides think of groom's salary as it is their entitlement?
As wives they have a legal right over their husbands property...it's in the marital vows....the groom has no legal right over his FIL's property....what his FIL wants to give his own daughter is between the dad and daughter...

I don't think it is entitlement but a law in most countries, that says after marriage assets are to be divided appropriately among both the partners if they decide to seperate. To preempt that, people can enter into prenuptial agreement before marriage.
