What you've mentioned is true in a lot of cultures in India. I've seen show-off culture mainly among North Indians (from North India) mainly influenced by bollywood films. I have seen a lot of North Indians in the US who boast about their belongings... "Hamaare paas toh yeh hain...woh hain...blah blah".[/quote]

I think it is not unique to North Indians and I have seen this attitude with a lot of people from Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu as well. I don't want to generalise, but I have experienced this with some of my relatives from both these places.

#243,
You are very much true. I never wrote the letter (#238) to differentiate between any two regions. This difference is basic human nature. If there are five people in North ploe all five will be different in attitude. I have one experience about this. Once in a gathering a group of three were chatting. I was the fourth person mainly listening. Two of them were mainly discussing about their latest sports car, then designer suit and at last about their expansive watch. The third one was participating occasionally only. Suddenly he asked other two fellows ' Anyway, whats the time now?" Both of them answered " Ten past nine". This third person answered " How come my $20 watch also giving the same time like your expansive watch?' Needless to say all were from same part of India. But different set up of mind.

I'm sorry for specifically mentioning North Indians in this category. But this was manily my observation. I'm neither from North nor South (I'm from Maharshtra), and am more familiar with gujarati and maharashtrian cultures.

Afetr coming to the US, I've been with both South Indian and North Indian people and have seen "show-off" people among both regions, but more from the NI region and hence my generalized statement.

Sorry if this hurt anybody. Peace.:)

"we went to my wife?s brothers wedding couple of years back and everybody from her family where suggesting to buy this wear this and buy that etc. My wife and I decided to be as simple as possible, I showed up wearing a $20 T-shirt. We never cared about what others will think."

In addition to the $20 Tee-Shirt, I think it showed dis-respect to them as well. If my son did that, I would tear a strip off him. I know my mother would have done it to me. One does not have to wear a diamond tiara, but not wearing even a suit (or some other dress conforming to the norms at these occassions) to sister's or brother's or B-in-law's wedding shows how little they are thought off.

I agree with this. Inappropriate dressing and being simple are two different things. Cheap t-shirts for family weddings are inappropriate. There are people who really beleive in simplicity but then they get married in very simple clothes and do not change their attire for anybody or any occasion (remember Mahatma Gandhi?). If you wear expensive clothes for your own wedding or your interviews, then wearing cheap clothes for Brother-in-laws wedding is not simplicity.

All I can say is that a $20 tee is not enough in a wedding, unless you top it with atleast a $300 jacket and pants. :)

Will you be present in boxer shorts in your son/daughter's wedding ?

Going_Nowhere
we are not going anywhere witht his conversation.
your question is childish..as long as you represent yourself in a decent attire you are ok.

again everyone has their own opinion, lets put an end to this and move on:)
