Let us face it. Whether R2I or just visiting India, good food ranks very high in the list of things to do in any city or town we visit. The goal of this thread is to list out all the reputed food joints that locals would recommend. Have you ever wondered where you would get the best tasting hyderabadi biryani in Hyderabad, best dhabha to visit in Delhi, the best tasting rosogolla shop in calcutta or the most recommended chat place in Mumbai?. Do you know of such a place in your local hometown or elsewhere?. Post your recommendations and lets get the word out.

Bon Appetit.

If you are familiar with bangalore, you would hear locals mention MTR and Vidyarthi Bhavan for best tasting dosas. On that list I would also like to add, CTR in malleswarm 7th cross. The benne dosas taste great and comparable to the above joints if not better.

Is there a place in chennai that has comparable idli/sambar to Murugan Idli Kadai?. Would be interested in checking it out during the next visit.

Paradise (Secunderabad): Famous for Biriyani, Mirchi ka Salan
Why is it famous: Exquisite taste, the formula for Dum Biriyani is a family secret, Value for money, when I was a kid, i know those people who work hard will end up here, have biriyani (it was 10 rs then now it is 43), A complementary pan was given then, not sure if the tradition is same, no messing with time, you order, before you twitch ur eyes biriyani is right in front of you...

Parvez, Namlapply, Hyd: Famous for Biriyani, and Haleem, best time during Ramzan for Haleem, while am a vegetarian can't say too much abut it, but Biriyani is spotless
Why: apart from most of the above metioned, its next to a train station and Bus station, so you can have quick grub and you can get going, being in the city centre, you are near to all the shopping including the famous Industrial exhibition, best time to visit is Dec/Jan (yes now :) )

Garden Restaurant: again for biriyani
Blue Sea Chai for a special Hyderabadi chai
Madina Hotel near Charminar for famous Irani Chai
Chinese Bandi or the road side stalls fast food chinese restaurant for the fast food, Manchuian and the noodles are just treat/diwali to ones tongue

Dont go to any 5star hotels, they are just rip off.

Heard golconda hotel has a biriyani festival, like you pay 75 rupees and eat how much ever u can, thought it was great idea.

PM me if you want any specific place, I'll let you know.

Andhrababu,

Coming from Madhapur, proceed towards Punjagutta/LV Prasad Eye Hospital... you should now be on the Banjara Hills Road, there is a good restaurant before you hit BaaN to the right(this will be next to a cross roads). Apologies I cant recall the name of it, but its a good spot for family. The crowd that come are normally offices in Madhapur and the nearby Banjara Hills residents. It is classed under Dhaba. Avoid going during lunch hours as many office-employees come there during this time. Night/Evening is a great time to go. You have both open air and closed restaurant. I'm only guessing for a family of 5 it should cost you around 1000 bucks. Tip the waiter some 50 bucks he'll get you the best spot and you'll be treated royally :)

Unfortunately Madhapur doesnt boast of any good hotels/eataries. O ya, there is one lovely Rajasthani Dhaba called Dhol-re-Dhani, worth a visit, once it was outskirst of city, but now its a part of city, its on the old-bombay highway road.

cnu,

Good job with the recommendations. However, I'm looking to take my family out for some lipsmacking veg biryani. Do you have any recommendations for a classy family joint? The location could be anywhere in Hyd. We are located around Liberty/basheerbagh.

Good thread.

HighTorque:

Murugan is good. The Taj in Chennai offered (3 years ago) a relatively inexpensive (for the ambience and quality) multi-course lunch that a friend took me to and later I took the extended family to - the alcoholic beverages are outrageously expensive though.

Bobus, thanks for your recommendation. I have always stayed away from food in five star hotels other than their bars which I frequent (mostly the ones in nungambakkam high road and cathedral road) while in chennai with friends. But with your recommendation, will pay more attention to what Taj has to offer next time.

Btw, I have visited Amaravathi restaurant in alwarpet(?) but for some reason did not find its taste in par with its reputation. Ordered some chicken dishes.
