Folks,

Has anyone considered a second home/summer home in a hill station or near beach in south india ?

I was thinking about a small house (30*40) or a small apartment(2 bedroom) in a hill station or close to beach either in karnataka/tamil nadu/kerala/Goa

Anyone done this ?

Are there any beach front gated condo communities type of thing in India
(like the kind in Florida) that u know of ?

I'm looking for relatively cheap place. (< 25Lakhs).

Any experience/insights/opnions welcome.

Good idea... Got to explore areas like Munnar in TN (or Kerala?) and places in Goa etc .....

in the long run, it might turn itself as a good vacation rentals. I am in too.. if we can explore some good areas..

My wife and I are in the process of buying land (transaction will be completed by end Jan 2008) at Yercaud - called poor man's Ooty - at Rs.250 per square feet. If interested, I can supply details.

I always thought about this, but haven't had chance to act. Can we start a group purchase ? If so, count me in.

Bobus, it may work out for you. You have relatives around Yercaud that can take care of the land. What will other folks that live in USA and do not have any one to take care of the land do? They won't even know if some one occupied the land. Won't it be risky?

Are you planning to build anything or keeping this as land itself?

#5 Layman:

Am not recommending that anyone buy at Yercaud. Of course, it helps to have reliable people who can monitor, regardless of where land is bought.

We have no near term construction plans.

Bobus,

If its not too personal, how do you recommend financing a purchase like it? If one gets a bank loan and pays EMI, does that reduce the risk? Will banks finance such purchases?

Also, what is your purpose of buying this land? Are you buying for a permanent base after R2I, a vacation place or purely investment?

Thanks in advance.

Man, Munnar is such a utterly beautiful place. I was completely blown over
by the beauty.

Even if 2-3 people are doing this together I will join in a heartbeat.

Munnar, Yercaud, Ooty might be good places. Thanks for link on Yercaud, Bobus.

Lets keep this discussion going. Any beach places ?

If u know of any US style gated properties, pl do let me know. That might
provide one additional layer of security.

Thanks

Found this. Major land scam in Munnar.

http://www.hindu.com/2007/05/12/stories/2007051212110400.htm

Looks like well heeled desis and NRIs have already done what I'm thinking.

The problem is, when too many builders and real estate developers join the fray, major
fraud happens. So, need to be very very careful. Exactly the kind of stuff
CD was talking about.
