In my opinion, no place is safe at 01:45 AM. If you are out at two in the morning you will surely come against some wierd/bad/homeless/whatever-you-wanna-call-it people. This is not related to India it could happen anywhere. If it was US, they would be found with bullets in their head.

T20 celebration parade in Mumbai - daytime - saw similar incidents.
I've read about such boorish incidents in the US as well - cinco de mayo celebrations in SJ for e.g.
It's shameful and I would never consent to any woman being in situations or crowds where such incidents could potentially occur.

at least this issue is being highlighted and raised and arrests being made. but the fact remains that women are not respected in india at all. the indian male is almost schizophrenic in this regard - on the one hand is the goddess worship and respect for mother which is good but the same guy will come out of his house and think nothing of rubbing himself against a woman in a bus or catcalling a girl passing by on the street. it is one thing to discreetly or even openly enjoy the beauty of a pretty and well turned out girl, but it is totally unacceptable to violate that person by inappropriately touching or commenting in any way, leave alone anything beyond that. I think it will take some more maturity on the part of the desi youth to get to that state.

Absolutely, true! How can one worship a Devi at home, and then not see Her in a woman/girl passing by? Schizophrenic!

Few cousins of mine came back from Mysore Dasara parade (day time) and reported harassment. I would never consent either.

I wouldn't blame the women, they were with their husbands celebrating new year's eve at a five star hotel. If they step out of the hotel at 1 AM with their husbands, I wouldn't call it 'inviting trouble'.
The larger issue is the complete lack of privacy for teenagers, younger people in India. Hotels are expensive in India, so you will find these youngsters kissing/hugging in public parks, where the police and morality brigade sweep down upon them. Public display of affection is still a huge taboo even in large cities in India. Add to that the continuous titallation in the media/movies, and you realize that there is no 'sexual outlet' for Indian youngsters. In extreme cases, this translates into groping a woman in large groups.
I am not condoning the behavior of those guys, but I suspect we will see more and more of these incidents until our society is more tolerant about public display of affection.

both the girl and her boyfriend were nris. what was the need for them to take a walk outside at 1.45 in the morning, knowing that there are drunken men everywhere? such men in this state have only one thing when they see a girl like her. it appears this girl's male friend, who supposedly runs motels in US, has never seen life in the big city. this could happen in any big US city. in US the girl may have even been gangraped and shot dead. at least that didnt happen. this guy needs to go back to his motels in small town USA and whine about how india is going to the dogs like most nris (non required indians) do.
