Taking Car back to India

Is it worth taking your luxury car back to India?
I have car enthusiast friends in India and they think there's a good market for BMW/Mercs as huge import duty is imposed on these cars. For example, new E320 might cost Rs. 45-50 lacs in India.
I believe if you take your used car back to India, you'll have to pay very less duty since you would have owned it for certain period of time.
Anybody done this before? or planning to do..
Pls share your experiences/thoughts.

This topic has been discussed to death on the MSN R2I site. In a nutshell, Left-hand drives CANNOT be imported into India as stated clearly by GOI.
Now, if it is right-hand drive car, then that is a different story. But, the custom duty is very high and it may be just better to buy the luxury model in India especially for warranty reasons.

You can get really nice vintage cars at auctions all over the USA. If you are into old hotrods, have you considered taking those?

I can look into vintage cars (of course Left hand) but the bottomline is whether it's profitable to do it or not.
As per Nattusbs, doesn't seem like there's much weight in this idea.

Vintage cars are not for driving around. They are mainly for show purposes. If you are into vintage cars, and do not mind keeping it in case you cannot sell it for a profit, then its a no-brainer.

I am r2i soon. I have a car which i would like to bring to india with me. I am unsure if i want to live in india forever. My questions is can i sell my car in india and go back abroad again without car. Or my car have to go with me if i decide after 1 year to return abroad.?
Also do i have to pay any custom for bringing Car to India ?
I am an Autralian Citizen, i am unsure if the custome laws are same for me ?

I am not sure how it works coz u r not a indian citizen, but i know for a fact u dont need to take the car back. secondly, there is a tax, used to be 110% of current value of car. maybe they reduced it now.
