Some more info on AT vs MT. I am about to buy my first car (small) here in India and I have to say, economics wise, MT is definitely better than AT both in terms of immediate buying cost and fuel cost. With petrol prices shooting so high, the difference gets magnified.

[For Hyundai i10]
On-Road Price
Manual:5,00,000
Automatic:5,80,000
Extra cost for Manual = Rs.80,000

Fuel
Assume 10,000 kms a year
Manual (Mileage=15km/li, Petrol=Rs.70/li)
10,000km=667li=Rs.46,690

Automatic (Mileage=10km/li, Petrol=Rs.70/li)
10,000km=1000li=Rs.70,000

So, you end up paying ~Rs.23,000 every year extra for fuel plus initial cost of Rs.80,000 extra. And with petrol prices increasing, 23K will keep going up.
Whether this huge cost is worth the convenience of an AT depends on the individual. I am myself in a big dilemma. :-(

There is difference of 2 km/l when it comes to AT vs MT. 5 km/l is too much.
I agree that you will have to pay little more. But it is very convenient on the roads where it takes 30 min to cross 2 km. You don't have to keep on changing the gears.

I have driven santro AT and i10AT. happy with both the cars. In small segment these are the only cars available if you are particular about AT.
We bought the I10 AT recently. There was no waiting period.

Absolutely, so much so that the basic model of Tata Nano comes without the L wing mirror- when I saw that, I told myself I would never buy a Tata car as it looks like they do not pay heed to basic safety measures.

DH drives a manual i10. I drive an A-Star Automatic. Both of us get mileage between 10-12 km/L. He is a good driver. Who with a manual i10 gets a regular mileage of 15- he will be interested to know. unless one drives without A/C etc

Difference in the mileage/average between Manual i10 & AT I10 may be 2 Km but with same price range/size we can get other cars like Maruti swift which gives mileage/average about 14-15, So I think the difference between AT Vs manual comes around 4-5. If you are purly thinking about ecomony than yes Manual is economical than AT special with continuously rising petrol price
