may not be related but i feel the widening divide between super rich and ordinary man in India -- other than that it doesn't matter to me :|

Sorry to sound like a commie, but when the richest hundred Indians have amassed equivalent of 25% of the country's GDP, while on the other hand 850 million other Indians earn less than 0.5 USD (20 Rs.), my chest refuses to swell with pride seeing forbe's list, it depresses me more when I read that Mukesh (the ambani) is all set to become the world's richest man by 2014, surpassing Carlos slim from mexico.
Depressing because in a recent interview when asked about the charities by US billionaires like Gates, he cleverly said that those circumstances were entirely different (Than from India), and that the priority (for him) would be to build a company which gives best value for its share holders.
For once I liked a brilliant essay from arundati roy (whom I other wise hate), in this week's cover story in outlook magazine. It is difficult to argue with facts and ground realities.

I would rather feel proud if Indian companies figure in the Fortune list than individuals.

I would rather prefer Warren Buffet, Bill Gates to become richer so that atleast some portion of the money finds its way back to anti malarial and other educational charities rather than these rich Indians who would just pass it on their progeny.

Just look at Indian Businessmen's Wealth Creation and we all will be surprised that how much is made illegally, how much is through black route, how much they bribed the Govt. to get their policy implemented, how much link they have with corrupt politicians/Govt bureaucrats and we all will be stunned where barring a few, most of them have created wealth for themselves by destroying others. Above all, most of them lack professionalism where they treat fellow indians in extremely shabby manner (Exceptions like Narayana Murthy are there but only a few individuals) where their only objective is to make 'Money' at the expense of lack of environmental regards, civic sense and lack of human values!! Shame on them!!!

I admire Warren Buffett and Bill Gates for their charitable work.

When I see an Indian in the Forbes list, I try to compare him/her with either Warren Buffet's simplicity/generosity or try to compare him/her with Bill Gates' generosity.

When I do this, I find no reason to be proud to see that Indian in the Forbes list. My feelings lean towards a little hatred...

I also fail to understand why my fellow Indians consider Ambani's or Mittal a hero !!

While millions of my Brothers and Sisters are sleeping on streets in India, Mr. Mukesh is going to have a billion dollar sky scrapper. Six Floors will be dedicated to his fleet of expensive cars. Money spent on that Sky Scrapper could feed how many Indians for how many months/years?

They did not lobby US govt to change policies to suit their business? Did they not donate money to campaigns?

Is that project of skyscraper not generating local jobs for thousands for workers/contractors? More than charity, India needs business investment which can teach people on how to fish.

Even with an inefficient govt of India and countless challenges, these individuals have amassed lot of wealth for their shareholders and themselves. I may not be proud but I have good amount of respect for these individuals. It takes really good amount of hard work to keep business running and generating wealth for a country.

Most of you are comparing apples and oranges.. My Buffeet has made plans to donate since a. he's pretty old b. he really dosent want to leave anything behind for his well off kids c. and yes i agree he is a simple chap drinking his well publicized cherry coke

India's best hope today is that their capitalists who are pretty young btw continue to generate wealth for themselves and shareholders...its India best shot at lifting folks out of poverty....in essence they can make better use of that cash than donate it...and in any case why should they pay for what actually the Gov is supposed to provide for? They aren't responsible for our pathetic gov's policies and 500 Mil poor people. Would you ask SRT to donate the millions he has amassed to clean up Dharavi?
