Friends,
I am US citizen, Returned to India 2 months back and need help in following situation.

My cousin got the admission to a postgraduate school but through the NRI quota. He wants me to give him a letter saying that I am sponsoring him (or of that sort). Now since I R2Ied two months back, I am no longer NRI, but I think technically my NRI status is valid for four more months. This letter needs to be notarized.

On one hand, I want to help him but on the other I am not sure if there are any issues. Has any one been in similar situation, are there any problems/suggestions. I appreciate all the help.

REgards.

You will never be a resident indian till you regain the Indian Nationality. So for this purpose you are still a NRI and you have to foot the fees in FEx.
As per ITax rules, you are probably NRI to turn into a RNOR after 4 months.

Thanks DBS,
Are you saying that he will have to paty fees in $$s. I think the fees are more for the NRI quota, not sure if thats what you meant.

Yes, that is my understanding. That was certainly true 15 years back. It may have changed since then. The prospectus for the admission will spell it out.

Will you be providing any financial assistance at all? If you are not planning to, make sure giving the letter does not obligate you in future. I think you need to be careful with these sorts of things in India.

#5,

No escape. The letter is exactly would say that you will sponsor the kid and would pay the fees in US$. Your NRI status does not matter later. You are not promising you will be NRI for ever. So, do not worry about it.

Yes, US$ fee will be higher but kids with lower marks can get admission in reputed institutions using this route. Another loop hole in India exploited.
