Why do such day robbery/ rape crimes never happen in US/ UK? How come a gang be so fearless to commit such crimes on a major highway openly?

I am not sure if our life time, we will get to see India getting rid of such crimes at grass root level ...I wonder if something can be done by the likes of us common public to root out such evil from our society

Open day? Don't you mean daylight?

I don't know if you're aware but India's daughter Uzma has clarified that there is no place like India: http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report-thrilled-to-breathe-air-of-freedom-there-s-no-place-like-india-uzma-after-her-ordeal-in-pakistan-2451159

Yes, it happened in open and during the day - is this that difficult to comprehend?

What has Uzma got to do with this? Is Uzma's word gospel?

There have been 8 known and recorded incidents of rape in UP during the month of May so far and probably other unrecorded and unreported ones.

Uzma has suffered in Pakistan and is back, but what that has no relationship to this issue. Problem is that India has problems and problems galore. Unfortunately many like to bury their head in sand.

Not to bury my head in sand or anything, but UP has population equal to Brazil, and police count totaling a measly 130,000 (2013 numbers) (about a fourth of Brazil).

Hopefully as the tax base is slowly increased, there will be more money to spend on domestic security.

At least one rape every 11 minutes in Brazil: http://www.buenosairesherald.com/article/215282/at-least-one-rape-every-11-minutes-in-brazil

Just checked the US numbers. One rape every 3 minutes (2013 numbers).

Crimes again women are unfortunately not limited to a region or country or society.

Some other thread asks for ideas to improve India.

I would recommend using the current police force (or private contractors hired by the police) to do a few decoy patrols to send notice to the decoits.

A car with muslim "girls" in full burqua (but packing heat., some automatic weapons, under the outfits) go out there to the UP rural roads, and take out a few gangs, would send the right message.

Rape is an epidemic in Brazil and such conditions should not be accepted, worse they should not be used to say, aah well, UP is like Brazil too.

We have to accept that there is a serious problem, especially given that a lot more rapes most likely go unreported. If we don't then we have a pillow over our head. So what can we do? Not much as a foreigner, nonetheless the more we expose it, the more the pressure builds on govt to take more proactive actions. We have to do whatever we can do, howsoever little or big it might be to create an awareness of the problem, not brush it away.

We can support organizations, NGOs that focus on helping women and girls out, whether that be $5 or $50 or $500. Every little bit helps. There are people who work in these organizations and NGOs to help women who have been assaulted, help them how to avoid etc, the least we can do is at least support such organizations or bring awareness. Even if we manage to make a couple additional people more cognizant of the situation, that is a good step.

Agreed with all of the above. My point was only around the title of the thread - why only in India.

The title of the thread, before anyone goes into the link to find out that
(1) "Open day" is nothing like "open house" -- a day when everyvone is welcome to .... well... rape and robbery.
(2) "why only in India ?" -- not only piques the interest to click the link to find out whether India had declared a day in the calendar that is open to whatever..... or..
(3) as member SID had done, invites comparatives with other grim countries for women.

Admin can fix the title, so that we don't go back to Sweden, and offer a per-capita datum on rapes.
-------------------

that said....
it is sad that so many are taking their girl children into a dangerous scheme of things..... for the girls, as well as their guardians, like, brothers, fathers, husbands and friends.

paisawala_sadhu;655639Why cant everybody traveling through UP carry guns, like they do in USA?
USA drivers in UP (upper peninsula of Michigan) don't carry guns. Michigan still has a thing against open carry, and concealed carry requires a permit. However, guns are cheap... take a look at the UP gun sales classifieds: http://up.backpage.com/SportsEquipForSale/ There are some collectors' items for less than a couple hundred bucks.

As for the UP in India, the wealthy can afford both armed-guards and gun licenses. Government procurement of grains uses the offer of gun-licenses to (the wealthy) grain merchants if they would sell their grain at the stupidly low procurement prices. [QUOTE]source
LUCKNOW: In a bid to boost wheat procurement and meet target, authorities in the Barabanki district of Uttar Pradesh have decided to go off the beaten track. The district administration in Barabanki, around 30 km from the state capital, has made it mandatory for those applying for arms licences to sell at least 50 quintals of wheat at government purchase centres in the district. Applicants have been asked to enclose a receipt given from a purchase centres along with their applications. Without the receipt, their applications will not be considered.
