Does anybody have any recommendations for free Kindle books? I am new to Kindle and want to try out some free books until I get comfortable with the product. I am not looking for anything specific, any books that you've read and found interesting will do.

It is the other way for me - I saw that lot of classics are available almost free on Kindle, and so want to buy it!
The complete works of Mark Twain, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Oscar Wilde and many more are less than $5. There seem to good reviews for most about the navigation and search.

You are right. There is a lot of cheap and free material on Kindle store. The latest generation Kindle with 3G and wifi is awesome. Should come in handy when I visit India next month.

I have tried Kindle with 3G and Wifi here in India, it works very well :). This was not a Metro (it was Hosur near Bangalore). So, you should be fine with the connectivity in Hyd.
I am also looking for free books on Kindle (for my 13 year old niece). Let me know if anyone has suggestions.

Have you looked at the most downloaded link on Children's library at archive.org?

If you like PG Wodehouse, many of his books are free on Kindle. Also, the Sherlock Holmes series.

gurusw;349894Does kindle indicate whether it is using wifi or 3G?
There is check coverage link on amazon (http://client0.cellmaps.com/viewer.html?cov=1). If I use that link, it tells me that there is no 3G in Bangalore. But kindle will use EDGE/GPRS coverage which is slower than 3G. So I am deciding whether to buy kindle wifi or kindle 3G. Any opinion?
Do we have any users of nook or sony? How do these readers stack up?
Finally, does the book availability vary depending on which e-reader you have?
I think it was using EDGE/GPRS in Hosur (didn't notice it carefully) when we switched off the Router. Understandably, it was slow. Wouldn't it better for you to get Kindle 3G now and use it when 3G becomes available in Bangalore.
With the ads going on TV (specially Airtel), I believe 3G should be in most places within a year. Don't take my word for it, let the folks from Bangalore respond back regarding this.

With 2G, maybe you have to wait for a min or two more for the book or magazine to arrive, but nothing beats the flexibility to buy a magazine on kindle at half the price or less while waiting to catch a flight or train esp after seeing the covers on the stand.
The interface of kindle beats Sony and nook hands down. The other two look like a cheap plastic copy of kindle.
The prices or kindle were much better before Jobs came on the scene with his IPad and hiked the prices.

After reading titles of free books here, I finally got a Kindle 3G. : ) Downloaded some classics. It is almost eerie to click on download in amazon.com and bing the book is in the Kindle lying next to computer. While the convenience cannot be denied, and browsing seems OK so far, felt a bit bad to in a way be contributing to the eventual end of books in print...
