Help with Atlanta apartments

Post by chaks »

Hi folks,

I'm evaluating an offer in Dunwoody, Atlanta area. If it goes fine, I will move from NJ to GA. I started initial research on the apartments near Dunwoody. My preference is to get a 2BR within 1200. We are a couple in late 20's and expecting a child this year. I need your help in deciding apartment which is safe for family. I've read some reviews in apartmentratings.com and city-data forums. Most of the apts have a common problems of house/car break-ins, bugs etc. Break-in is a bit concern for me. I can go a notch higher on the rent for safety.

Ideally I would like to stay in 15-20mins drive from work. I read a quote "Whereever MARTA is, crime follows". Thats the reason I'm looking a bit farther from Perimeter area. Apts I like till now are AMLI at Milton Park (Alpharetta) , AMLI at Northwinds (Alpharetta) and Walton Centennial (Roswell) Apartments. I'm still looking, I will add more if I find any.

Any thoughts on the above apts or apts which you suggest is appreciated. How much time it takes to drive from Alpharetta to Dunwoody during rush hours.

Thanks.

Remember most of the good places in and around Atlanta Suburbs are Safe but the rule in US is A place is safe till some incident happens!

Anyway, Dunwoody is a good area, there are nice apartment complexes on Ashwood-Dunwoody road and you can get apartments with Garage so that your car will be safe as well. Welcome to Atlanta, you have made the good decision from weather/cost point to move to Atlanta (weather wise it is much warmer and cost wise it is much cheaper as well)!!!

Chaks, did you check out Lake Union Hill Way Apartments in Alpharetta? We stayed there for 11/2 years back in 1999 and we liked the apartment and town very much. Of course, I hear from friends that Alpharetta has grown multi-fold since that time and not sure how good it is now. We, no kids back then, had a nice time living there and have nothing but pleasant memories :-)

I'm excited about moving South. I hope this move would be good for my career and family.

I'm talking to some of my friends there and seeing your comments, make me feel better about safety.
I'm used to leaving stuff in the car and sometimes not lock it. It became a routine for me to jump start my car because I forget to turn off the lights. When I told my friend about car break-ins in altanta area, he was joking that at least the burglar would turn off the lights for me. I'm thinking of using Promove (http://atlanta.promove.com/) to help me find the apartment. I read some good things about them in city-data forums.

You are right about the MARTA and crime .
Dunwoody used to be a safe place before and now its reputation has gone south .
Alpharetta is a good location in terms of safety and Desi crowd , accessibility , School district , Parks for kids , ..you name it .

I have been living in Alpharetta for the last 10 years .Commute will be a bit of a hassle from Alpharetta to Dunwoody .Alpharetta is from Exit 9 to Exit 11 on GA 400 , and Dunwoody is on Exit 5 on GA 400 which is about 10 miles .On a bad day it might take about 40 mins , but if you time your commute(before 7 AM and before 4:40 PM ) , you can do it in 15 mins or so .
Look for an apartment which is closer to GA 400 .
Send me a PM , i can send you my email address if you need more info

Cheers
