http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2010-04-29-arizona-immigration_N.htmAZ governor has signed a law that requires immigrants to carry proof of legal presence in the US at all times with them. Though primarily targeted towards Mexican illegal immigrants from south of the border, it could also affect desis --thanks to our similar skin tones.

I know a friend who was detained by the AZ immigration enforcement few years ago while he was driving cross country. He didn't have his latest H-1 stamped so they put him in detention before lawyers intervened. Everyone non-white looks illegal as you go closer to the AZ border. Now it seems it will be in the cities as well

After all these decades of civil rights struggle, they go and pass a law like this. Hopefully it will get overthrown.

I don't see anything wrong in deporting illegal immigrants. If the Federal government is not doing its job then atleast the States do something about it especially the ones that are getting most affected.

C2R, It's not just deporting the illegals. I think people are worried about racial profiling and misuse of this law. OTOH, the signing of this bill has brought the immigration topic back on the agenda, which is a good thing because of the broken legal immigration system Indian nationals are currently facing.

Mexicans do most of the blue collar work in some of the sectors in the US. Landscaping, construction, hospitality ...This is affecting employment chances of the goras in the same sector. Also mexicans have a higher reproductive rate and and tightly knit, so as time goes the % of latinos in the US will keep increasing. They are affecting the demographic of the nation and potentially the power structure. This could be pre-emptive measure to curtail further expansion. Just my 2 cents.

I see nothing wrong with this law. Arizona is a border state that has seen immense increase in illegal immigration. Illegal immigration does more harm to legal immigrants than native born, if you look at the details. Someone who stands in line for 8-12 years to become a citizen, loses more time when illegals come & take amnesty in waves periodically. They don't pay taxes as well.
I wish India also enforces such strict rules in Bangladesh border to prevent illegal immigration. It's very clear that votebank politics in India has allowed unprecedented increase of illegals in border districts of WB and Assam.
http://www.bengalgenocide.com/Yes, there is a small price to pay in terms of liberty, particularly for non-white skin color. But carrying a copy of documentation all the time in the wallet or purse can take care of that. I have driven through Arizona multiple times, through some of the remotest parts. It's not every cop stops a brown guy & profiles. The chances are more, but don't count that cops are stupid. They are trained well to segregate illegals from legals in a few minutes.
A welcome move to see Arizona becoming stricter. We should all welcome this!
PS: Those on H1 or F1, see the paperwork closely. You are required to carry the copy of non-immigrant papers all the time anyway.

Thanks. I didn't know this.
Earlier in one of the threads, I had made a big fuss about the TSA Officer at Newark Airport asking for my H1 Papers (Visa had expired on my passport). This was a domestic flight from Newark to Orlando.
I argued with that TSA Officer for asking for immigration papers for a domestic flight (I had 3 hours to kill before the take-off). Looks like he was only doing his job.

So in theory even a third generation mexican-american will have to carry around proof that they are legally here in the US. So even after generations of being in this country and paying taxes here they will be legally treated as second class citizens. Does that not indicate racism on part of the government?
IMO, enforcement is the role of the border patrol and if it is not doings job it needs to be improved.
