What are the best places to buy furniture in US for full house including living room, kids room and bedroom. One that are reasonable in price and doesnt break the bank. Also quality should be better. Is there a national chain apart from Ikea which sells new furniture on discount.
Or Any local shops in Bay area where one can look for good bargains.
My living room furniture is a mess thanks to the kids and I am planning to replace everything in living room and few things in Bedroom. Kids room is fine but requires an upgrade too. In long term I would like to carry this furniture back to India when I R2I. Any pointers are welcome.
Thanks
PS: I bought my last furniture on piecemeal basis from Ikea or other stores like walmart but now want to go for one single store where I can get good bargains for the big $$$ spend.

checkout a chinese store on the intersection of elcamino and lawrence. I dont remember the name but it is quite big. in the complex on the other side of Lucky. there are many such stores on el camino but this is the best.
if you want to go for good, designer stuff at reasonable price...try Scandinavian designs in cupertino.

Sometime ago, Layman had a good location in Automall Parkway area in Fremont that he liked. La Bros furnishings, I think. I have been putting of visiting there - I need to change my bedroom thingies. But it looks like Costco also has good deals ($500 off).

This thread
Microfiber vs leather sofa has info on some bay area shops including the one MINF mentioned above.
The one our.r2i mentioned, at the intersection of El Camino & Lawrence, would be
United Furniture Club.
If not in a hurry, then Costco online has good deals regularly for bedroom furniture, office, living room and kids room. Even though it is online, they have a no questions asked return policy (they come and pick up).
For kids room, I was looking for a particular kind of Captains bed manufactured by Raymond Oak, and in a particular color, the only store to carry these was Bay Furniture Club 1290 Tully Road, San Jose, CA 95122 (408) 278-7035. They've moved since then to where Levitz used to be. (San Tomas and something intersection).
Craigslist will have posts from many furniture dealers, but most would need you to buy without looking at the furniture...
overall, we found furniture from United furniture Club to have lasted many years. Though, we shopped more at their Cupertino location than the Santa Clara (Lawrence) location.

In general East Bay is a little cheaper than South Bay. There a bunch of Chinese furniture stores on Stevenson Blvd (on Newark side). They bargain like crazy. Once you like something, offer them 60% of the quoted price and you can easily settle for 75% of the quoted price. Also, if you are willing to pay cash they will reduce it further. Almost all the stores offer free delivery.

I have been unhappy with the quality of furniture from those chinese stops on Stevenson Blvd. Do others share the same feeling?

Oh, stop being so sombre about just furniture! Next, you'll suggest a support group : )
Most of these stores, including United Furniture, carry furniture from the same manufacturers and have the same catalogs. The furniture is definitely not the kind that will elicit "wow where did you buy it from" comments from discerning female guests, but no problem with the quality.

Some items appears to be good- you have to be discerning. I bought a dining table. One screw after the other comes off, and one leg after the other splinters off. Sometimes we are afraid to sit on a chair not knowing when we would go down. Frequently I am down on the floor, screwing one screw after the other. *sigh*. Mr.Allen is my best friend.
I am not in the rat race for the wow factor - there are more important things in life. Some quality is preferred :-)

Agreed. Most of the stores in Bay Area (East Bay or South Bay) carry furniture / catalogs from the exact same manufacturers. Designs & quality is decent and actually after sales service is not bad. Once you like a specific model/design you can bargain (and shop) for it in different stores to get the best price. Of course if you are looking for 'exclusive' or not-from-catalog designs then these stores are not for you. They don't manufacture the furniture, they just assemble and sell it.

I think costco is a good place. I see the items in Costco connection and both quality and price look good.
If I were to buying new things, I 'll definitely consider and most likely buy from there.
I don't think need to look for cheapest furniture anymore specially if the items are to take to India also.
