Friends:
I got a year project in Torrance area near LAX airport. I am still considering whether to take up this assignment or not.
Is this a good residential area, if so, any recommended apartments whichare safe, nice and ethnic.
Is this a very expensive place? based on that I can negotiate my rate.
I understand LA traffic is horrible, so like to live closer to work.

I dont live in torrance or redondo beach but live about 100 miles from there.
torrance is a good area for living and rents might be in the range of 1300 for single bed and 1500 or 1600 for double bed. u can get cheaper or more expensive depending on exact location, facilities etc etc. check out sulekha.com as i heard that indians coming to US projects use that portal to find good rental properties etc.

Having lived in Torrance for more than 6 years in 90503, here is my take.
Very good place to live. Now its pricey to own a home.
Weather is generally on cooler side. Many homes and most of the apartments in Torrance do not have A/C.
Good schools.
Very near to Beach, Night life (Hermosa Beach), Safe.
20-40 minutes to Airport (15), downtown(25), Disneyland (35), Universal studios (40), Little India (25), Santa Monica(30), Hollywood(35)
90503, 90501 are very good zip codes in Torrance. Avoid neighboring Carson, Hawthorne, Lawndale, Harbor City. They share borders with 90502, 90503 (Hence not good as comapred to 501, 0r 503).
Generally rents are high in those two zip codes - 1200 upwards for 1BD, 1400 upwards for 2BD. That is the starting range for reasonable apartments. The place I lived had 1BD for 1450.
Del Amo Mall and almost every big retailer has their presence in Torrance.
Many Indian restaurants, theatres and small time Indian shops,
Lot and lots of Desi population (along comes lots of Amway guys...)
Lots of TCS, INfo, Wipro guys.
Lots and Lots of chinky population.
Lots of younger population with mentality of looking down your Honda or Toyota as compared to their Lexus, SUVs, MB and other visible exotic and convertibles.
Public transport is as usual horrible as in Southern California.
OVERALL-cannot go wrong with Torrance
