Here is my problem. I have a very long given name and surname as per the passport.

Given name as per passport: AAA BBBBBB CCCCCCCCCC

Surname as per passport: XXXXXXXXX YYYYYYYYY

All my immigration related papers ( H1, I-140, wife's H4) all have the name as XXXXXXXXX YYYYYYYYY, AAA BBBBBB CCCCCCCCCC. All other documents such as SSN card, License, bank accounts, credit cards have my name as AAA BBBBBB CCCCCCCCCC only and do not have any reference to the Surname XXXXXXXXX YYYYYYYYY. This happened because I never used my surname in India and used my only my given name when applying for SSN when I came to US and subsequently used that for everything else when settling down in US many years ago.

Recently when I went for renewing my driving license, DMV told me that they have to correct the name on the license to include the surname to be able to renew that. Now my license is corrected and reads as AAA XXXXXXXXX-YYYYYYYYY. I am thinking that it would be good idea to get the name corrected in my SSN, credit card, bank accounts and future pay stubs and w2s. I am yet to apply for my I-485 and do not want this name mismatch to cause any issues.

Did anyone deal with similar issues? Should I go ahead and correct the SSN, credit card and bank accounts to include the name as XXXXXXXXX YYYYYYYYY, AAA BBBBBB CCCCCCCCCC. Thanks.

I had a similar problem. My first name and last name are reversed. With different iterations of my H1's, everything got messed up. The folks at NJ DMV refused to renew my license in 2010 saying that they don't match.

They told me either get the H1 papers changed or the name in the SSN changed. They told me that name changing at SSN would take only 2/3 days and that was the way to go. Since I was r2'ing, I didn't bother to change it. Yes, I would think you should go ahead and correct SSN and bank accounts. It would make your life easier with the immigration folks.

File an Affidavit & Notary concerning this; talk to an attorney. Do you have your birth certificate with English Translation?

How does name appear in Passport? Go by the passport thing; ask if you can get an authentication letter from Indian Consulate.

I thought it would be straight forward to get the name corrected in the SSN card and based on that just need to get the name corrected in the bank account and credit card. Can you please elaborate on why there is a need for Affidavit and Notary??

If SSN people can accept then it's not a problem. Usually, USCIS, too asks for an evidence; I had submitted English Translation of my Birth Certificate.
