My wife's friend works in a Indian Grocer and she informed my wife the need to buy rice quickly as the prices will go up soon. Reason - India banned non-basmati rice exports.
Sure enough I was able to find this article in Reuters. All Idly's and Dosa's will now be more expensive :emsad:

I sometimes wonder who eats sona masoori and other non-basmati rice other than we NRIs? Last year there was a ban on exporting Tuvar dal...who consumes Tuvar dal other than Indians abroad? What percentage of dal is actually exported?
BTW, has anybody thought about growing rice, dal, groundnut in Americas (north/south) and exporting it to India? South American countries seem to have vast tracts of good land and probably its cheaper to grow stuff there instead of growing it in India.

I prefer the Thai Jasmine rice anyway. Basmati is overrated.

DBN, have you tried making Dosa's with thai jasmine rice?
My wife says she can live without rice but not without Dosa's.
So much for being from Tamil Nadu. ;)

Very interesting. Did you spend any time / efforts in implementing this idea?
I always wondered why the arable lands of South America are so cheap.

Dude the only way i've made dosas ever in my life is as follows: buy frozen Udipi dosas from grocery store. Take them out from packaging. Heat in microwave for 2 min. Serve hot. :emsmilep:

I dont see what the big deal is. Two options:
1. Buy basmati rice
2. Buy other types of rice from other countries (Jasmine, Thailand).
Honestly, I could not tell what other types of rice exist other than Basmati and Jasmine.

One more move to drift away from a export-driven economy ? First the govt is allowing rupee to grow stronger and therefore discouraging exports and now this ? Export of Rice anyway fetches lesser rupees as rupee is going up so it may not be a bad move to reduce domestic inflation. Alternately GoI may be gearing up for mid-term elections and setting the platform with lower prices for basic items such as Rice. They already decided to continue the policy of subsidizing petrol, diesel, kerosene.
