Hi,

My son is turning a year shortly. We are planning to have a small party, with just about 30 people. We are vegetarians and are looking for ideas on where we can hold the party. I have seen some people host parties in parks, but I am not sure how they go about arranging food. Would the caterers deliver food to the place mentioned? Our budget is close to 1000$. Would appreciate if you can post your ideas/suggestions on the place to host, the theme, and the estimated price (venue/theme/food). Also how necessary and expensive are the return gifts generally? I know this can vary from person to person, but I am trying to get a general feel of what the practice is like. How long do people usually keep the party on? Would appreciate if you could help me with with your inputs. Thank you!

We celebrated our son's first bday at a local firehall (halls attached to firehouses, atleast in North East). The facility was rented out for 4 hrs. We got the food delivered from an Indian restaurant. Wifey was keen on Pooh theme. So we got pooh cake, pook decorations, even pooh gifts. Additions are face painting, ballons, caricature etc depending on budget. Good luck.
One imp suggestion would be to hire a professional photographer.

My second son is turning one soon. So will go through the same grind again.

I'm not familiar with the Fremont area but depending upon the age of the other kids in the group, you can select a suitable place like an indoor play house, zoo or even a children's museum.

One year old birthday celebrations are generally for parents, i have seen many one year olds getting tortured on their first birthdays, crying while being forced to cut the cake. The kid had no clue on whats going on.

If your guests list contains lots of kids, you can arrange birthday party in Pump it up, Jungle Fun or Chuck-E-Cheese. I have been to many such parties and usually kids have a great time there.
