It's that time of the year. The perseid meteor showers are expected to rain in a couple of days. This year they are expecting more meteors than previous years. Has anyone watched them before?

I am interested in knowing the best places to watch them. I live in south bay in California & would like to take my 7 year old with me.

TIA.

The other day, got an email with a discount for meteor shower boat cruise on living social.

You could check up if there is a boat operator who can take you out. I presume that would give a good view, away from the city pollution and lights.

Check on meetup if there is a local astronomy group that is getting together. You could also check the local observatory. Colleges have astronomy clubs as well.

Many options.

I go for a jog, very early in the morning. Never missed a sighting of a few meteors.

I think ,this is the most important advice. I have stayed up many years till 1 - 2am . But I hardly see any/few. But once ,I woke up early , walked out to get my cell phone from my car and with in 10 min saw 20 of those showers. Some even bombed like fireworks. From then on, I am big fan of early morning sightings. Make sure Sun does not rise by that time. ( Also try to watch venus. In winter sky it brights up like diamond. Once sun comes up , venus fades away ).

Drive 20 min away from city center. It makes a huge difference.

Watch for the weather. Even a slight cloud cover will spoil the chance.
