Craig's list is just like an ad service. The seller advertises thro' craigslist. The buyer contacts the seller directly using the info provided in the ad. Whatever happens further is between the seller and the buyer.
I never buy anything non-local using craig's list because of scam fears. If anything is local I talk to the seller by phone first and agree upon the price by phone. Then I visit the seller pay him and take the goods.

Yes. Craig's list provides the service for each city. I only look at thee ads for my city. You can even narrow down to your town. Once I have initial negotation by phone, I go visit the seller and complete the transaction. All my transactions involves physical presence of seller and buyer.
Once I advertised and some buyer contacted me and said that he will send a cheque and I have to send him the article. I said "No." Normally, only local guys will contact you if you advertise in craigslist.
