Odd ... so the guy forgot how cricket is played once he set foot in the US?

dbs;165176 He instead asked him about the cricket. The response was that it was the first channel that he switched on but the guys were playing in a funny fashion. They would hit the ball and then throw away the bat when taking a run. It transpired that a replay of Cleveland Indians was being shown.

During my University Days (late 90's) one particular apartment complex used to be extra popular with Desis. At one time, in our building out of 4 apartments, 3 used to be occupied by Desis. Once a white guy was visiting and he knocked on our door (I guess by mistake) and realized his mistake immediately when my roommate opened the door in his cotton pyjama and hawai chappals (with smell of freshly cooked indian meal coming out) he asked whether he knows where Dave lives.

My roommate replied with a straight face "I don't know. But on the 2nd floor a 'foreigner' lives may be ask him." Our 'foreigner'-visitor left without a word.

After being in US for the last 4 years we (Myself and Wife) started having Cheese Burger From Mc Donalds few months back thinking its just cheese Burger and there is no meat in it. Later My wife discovered its Beef and did not tell me initially :).Well though we did not have any Beef in our life before we liked it :).

The big one is when my in laws came to US for the first time I took them to MC Donalds (you know what i would have ordered!!) they liked it too.

We came to know its beef after above all these incidents and stopped going to McDonald's. In-Laws must be wondering why they are no taking us anymore though its cheap. :) :) :).

So what DID you think that brown-colored chewy substance between the bun and the cheese was?

This reminds me of us desi's accent especially during the initial days, while pronouncing the american names,,, One of my Gujju friends' used to call Brian as Brain and it took some time for Brian to figure out that he was being talked to,,,, other name that comes to my mind was that of 'Bonnie', for a long long time desi's were addressing her as 'Bony' ,,,

Good one Hyd-i.

Makes me think about the first time I got out of des. My first long trip anywhere was to Stuttgart, Germany. Even with all the training by colleagues, my trip was filled with funny incidents.
1. Got off at the airport, and walked right into the glass. Never knew glass could be so transparent, I guess I was admiring the clean floors. There was a nose and mouth imprint on the glass :-) Dark skin helped hide the red nose/forehead.
2. My project lead came with a 6'6" guy in a clean suit, in an Audi A6 to pick me up, I was being extra nice to the guy who was driving, and was concerned about being able to work with him looking at his English. We reached the hotel, & I asked my colleague (3 months senior to me in German exp.) how he manages to understand this guy. He fell on the ground, and said it was a taxi and he was a driver.
3. Got locked out of my hotel room with just a towel wrapped around. Did not know the german word for lock or key, and was sweating bullets while using the hallway phone.
4. Having never seen ice or snow, slipped & fell flat in my formal dress on day one. Felt happy that nobody shows up 10 minutes before the tram/train, and nobody saw me crash :-)
5. Yes, burnt the carpet while cooking for the first time in my life. There was no sambar odor that day, it was just the sweet smell of burnt carpet.

In the US:
My colleagues at a small startup I worked invited me for a hike. They mentioned they would try to get back before its dark, and the area is known for mountain lions and such. I said " In that case, I will bring my torch". They all looked puzzled and one of the smarty pants said, "What are you , a caveman?". I was confused as well, and I thought he was a racist pig.

My funny incidents happened even before we landed here in US.

I first came to US with two of my peers. It was their first entry to US too. At that time one drink per meal was free as well as wine I think. So I had my first wine sip and instantly disliked it. My friend on the other hand not only drank his part but made us ask the air hostess for drink and consumed later. About 30 minutes before landing, I guess his liver has stopped cooperating with him. Just minutes before landing he threw up like Niagara falls :)):))

I came to a small university town in south. Only a couple of seniors had cars. We used to go to Walmart (once every two weeks) by cab. Being all the new cooks, one thing every body knew how to make decently were eggs. In walmart they sell these 3 dozen egg trays. At one time we bought 7 such trays. Cab drivers sees these trays and asks Is there any calamity that he doesn't know of for which we are stocking up on eggs !!

OP,
Nice thread!..Had a nice laugh reading various experiences..:)

Here is one experience that stands out: My first time air travel was to Philly via Frankfurt..One of my colleagues (more of a friend) had given me a write up of all the dos and donts, and what is expected in customs, etc..I was travelling alone..At Frankfurt, we had like a 5 hour break..I went to a restroom to freshen up, turned a tap in one of the sinks and the water was real cold. I thought let me try another sink (!!) and went and tried and the water was warm..I had concluded for the day that in some sinks we get hot water and in some cold water..:))..So much for my common sense..:)
