Guys
I have some 401K money that i rolled over into Vanguard and have better funds to choose from. I have chosen the following funds

VTSMX
NAESX - Small cap
VFWIX - Intl

I need to invest some money in Bonds and that is where i am looking for some opinion. The amount is around 8k to be in Bonds. Could you suggest a good Bond fund. should i DCA into the Bond fund or it doesnt matter

dhindia,

What is your target allocation? Look at all your accounts in totality and don't hold bond funds in taxable account as they generate dividend income. Bonds are good in tax-deferred accounts - 401K, IRA etc.

If you are planning to invest 8K in taxable account, I would suggest buy VTSMX or VFWIX and if this puts you into too much stocks then move some money from Stock fund to Bond in your IRA account.

Again, this depends on your target allocation whether - 80/20 or 60/40

Hope this helps.

Thanks

-V

This is an IRA account. My allocation is already figured out and i need to allocate 8k into bonds. I had earlier had high yield fund and rest of my bond portion is in India. so this is my first exposure to bonds in US. I am thinking 80% VBMfx and 20% VIPSX

VBMFX has mortgage bonds. I will avoid them for some time.
Use VFSTX instead of VBMFX.

Yes, but they are Goverment-backed bonds (Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac), so their investors have the full credit of the U.S. Govt, unless I am mistaken. Whereas VFSTX has a sizeable portion of "asset-backed" bonds which is not defined well by Vanguard. Presumably, these are not tied to mortgage assets but we don't know if they are truly immune. Both funds are rated AA1/AA2 for their holdings, so I would not differentiate between the two so much. Holding VBMFX is also a fine choice as VFSTX - in a declining interest rate environment VBMFX may do marginally better.

My India Bond portion is in Post Office schemes. I had a MIS scheme started before it was closed to NRI's. Rest of it is in recurring deposits and FD's in my parent names. I have no investments in the indian debt mutual funds.

I would have invested in one of the Target Retirement Trust funds, because all of them are based on low-cost index funds, and I wouldn't have to worry about rebalancing them as I age.
