Desi,
I did not expect I will be first one to comment on your first post in the blog.
First I dont agree with your conclusion that prostitution should be legalised.
If current laws are not enforced properly we should look at strengthening the enforcement. Just because of the reason that police and polticians are getting richer, we should not abolish the law.
Prostitution is considered immoral activity in our society.
The law has a purpose, we call ourselves civilized society, right, we dont live like animals in the jungle. We have marriage and divorce. We have created laws for families. We have our own code to treat aunts, uncles, cousins etc. Just because they are adults, we dont marry any one.
Other animals may not have such laws for sex. But we do.
Strip shows can be an entertainment like movies. But prostitution is not.

I agree with Desi on this topic. We should not be confusing Morals with Laws because each person has his own morals and should not be forced on to others using Law.

These are not Laws. Some communities allow marriages to Uncles others dont.
Law is something that should be applicable to all like Crime.
Governments should not be formed to preaching Morals.

Exactomundo! In fact, that is the problem with the GWB government. They should take religion out of politics. Because prostitution is not legal, it is not organized like a business and there is a lot of exploitation going on because it is not organized. NGOs that try to work with prostitutes are made ineffective due to the pimp-politician-police nexus. HIV and AIDS is rampant because NGOs are not allowed to educate the prostitutes on the issue and even if they are educated, they do not have any bargaining power with their customers since they are not in control. India has the highest number of HIV/AIDS cases in the world today (at 5.7 million, more than Africa since in Africa, the epidemic has been contained).
I digressed with the AIDS issue a little bit, but by legalizing prostitution, we would be giving the sex workers worker's rights. Right now, they don't have any. Also, by not legalizing, sex trade is NOT going to go away by any means. So what is the argument for not legalizing?

I haven't read DB's blog yet (busy celebrating Prez' day...), but am taking the liberty to comment of your post since this is a discussion forum, hope it is okay...
Prostitution should be legalized, regulated and monitored as long as there is a need for sex workers in a society.
I can list at least one or two instances where any rational person would see a need for sex workers.
The collateral benefits of legalized prostitution in and to an advanced society are many.

So what other what is considered illegal and immoral activities should be legalized just because law is unable to control them in it's entity? Few things come to mind..corruption, drugs, manslaughter....
Even in the corruption two adults are involved and they don't have problem with it.

Dude, those are bad examples. Why? Because in each of those cases, there is a third party (or institution) to which some harm is caused. Manslaughter? cmon!

Legalizing comes with several different liabilities for the Govt like allowing advertisements on media (it can be curbed but will always remain debatable issue). Law suits will be plenty from both sides and Govt will have to set up tribunals to resolve conflicts between pimps and workers. IT raids to unearth unaccountable money will be required and worse still, the workers will have to provide receipts for transactions!!! If thats not enough somebody would want these expenses to become tax deductible for singles :-)
And I don't even want to talk about the recruitment drive that any legal business can undertake.
