Renting an RV

Post by karmayogi »

My parents and in-laws are visiting us this May. Like everybody else we plan to go on multiple tours in US. One such tour will be in North east and we are thinking of a week long tour.

Another family will also join us in the tour so the total will be 10 people (including a 2 yr old kid). Since we will be touring for almost a week, our food expenses per day for both & lunch I am estimating it to be around $200. This is $1400 a week just for FOOD! So my thoughts are to rent an RV + Van so that we can cook. Not only this saves money but also gives the opportunity to eat healthy food for my parents and in-laws.

Has anybody in the forum rented an RV? What are the negatives of renting one?
Is my idea workable? Our tour might most likely start from Niagara falls and end at Washington DC, covering NY, NJ, MD & PA.

How about Renting an RV when touring Florida or Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Los Angeles?

Thanks for any inputs.

I would advice you to do a search on google. There are plenty of websites giving tips for RV renters. You have to be thorough in your preparations before you go on an RV trip. This link is pretty good make sure you follow all the sub links and tips from experts.

Ideally its not advisable if you are going on trips two weeks or longer.

I have rented in the past the key things are to make sure you

1. know how to drive an RV.
2. Get relevant insurance
3. Find the right size RV for you (rental cost differes by size)
4. Pre-plan your staging areas (where you are going to stop for the nights if you plan on staying in RV) avoid big cities.
5. Know about waste disposal

Renting an RV

Thanks for the responses. I am just exploring practical difficulties of renting an RV. I will sure put a spreadsheet to compare the cost benefits of Renting an RV.

Given the fact that not much desi's rent RV's I am suspecting the practical problems may not be worth renting it.
