I think "Family" should be split into two seperate voting options: "kids growing up Indian" and "taking care of parents".

Coz one may be a higher priority than the other for a lot of people.
For example in my case i would rate taking care of parents higher than kids growing up India.

I don't know what "kids growing up Indian" means anymore in the context of present India.

#5 - DBN : Thanks for your comments. There are so many options available and I grouped several options into 5 categories that are closely related.

Regarding growing up as Indians - I feel that we can still grow our kids like normal Indians provided we give the same environment just like our parents gave by sending them to good Indian Schools, enabling friends who come from different social-economic backgrounds including lot of middle class and if possible not putting them to International schools where only rich folks and NRI's will be in majority. (No offense meant to anyone)

I would agree with "Desi_by_Nature"

It is better to split option 4 into "kids growing up Indian and for Education in India", "taking care of parents".

Guess I was the first to vote for 'Work'... IMO, this option could have been better titled as "Work or Business"

BTW, to the members who click on "Other (Food, Festival, Function & Friends)"

maybe this deserves it's own thread. I don't really see all that happenning so flawlessly the way you descibe it. First of all even public schools charge a hell lot these days - maybe even more than international schools in some cases.
I mean it really boils down to 2 choices - either send your kid to a govt. school and that way he grows up with poor and lower middle class kids. Or send him to a public school and he grows up with upper middle class and rich kids. Again, quality of education also varies - schools usually set their fees based on what they offer in terms of facilities, quality of teachers etc. If you want the best for your kid, you will usually end up sending him to the best school you can afford.

So no matter which school you send you kid to, the socio-economic dempographics of his peer group is pretty much pre-determined. Infact I feel the school system in the US offers a more diverse mix of socio-economic backgrounds than India.

One may argue, that kids in India grow up in a cultural setting - festivals, weddings etc.
I mean c'mon - how long will we keep ranting this? everything is so commericialized these days. Festivals are not what they used to be 10 or 20 yrs ago. Family gatherings, weddings etc. seem more like a waste of time to me - distract kids from studying.

Eventually when it's time for your kid to get a job, you want him to dress smart in western clothes, be mobile like an American professional, adopt a global outlook and all that. So what's really the point of growing up Indian?
I say it's better to teach your kids the right values, set a good example for them for atleast the next 20 years than to worry about whether they are indian enough or not. It's as hard to keep your kids straight in India as it is in the Us (many people unfortunately have this misconception that it's easier to raise kids with the right values in India.)

Trust me, as the world continues to turn into a melting pot of global cultures some values will emerge to be more important than others.

I disagree with you regarding fees for international schools viz public schools. I checked in Chennai the fee structure of public schools (Private public schools like Vidya Mandhir, PSB and ofcourse Private public govt. schools which even charge very less) versus International school and my findings state International schools are atleast 3 to 5 times the cost of public schools. In a typical CBSE structure Private public school the fee is around Rs. 700 to Rs. 1000 per month whereas in International School, it varies between Rs. 5000 to Rs. 15000 per month.(Some charge even Rs. 30000). Moreover, I feel that only rich kids can afford to go to International School as other folks cannot afford that kind of fees. The good news is that even people with moderate income in urban areas send their kids to Private public schools affording Rs. 700/month thereby enabling different socio-economic backgrounds.

Regarding other comments, I think everyone's approach is different to life and I value your views, even though I do not agree with your statements.

This is what many R2i people consider missing in western culture or countries.

Our kids love meeting with different people. if we have some guests or we go to someone's house they don't let them go back home. They need people and change from routine life.

As far as studying, it depends on how you want them to spend time. Most of the kids that I have seen, when they don't get any kind of entertainment or change in their daily routine they prefer sticking to video games/ TV rather than studying. Studying and social gathering are two different things.
I also know that many people take excuse on kid?s education to LIA. They have standard answer that ?even India is westernized so it is difficult to bring them up India culture?. In India, you will have more options than just one( western culture).

Hollywood or Bollywood stars don't represent any particular culture. They make or dress up in way that brings them more popularity and money.
Dressing in Indian or Western attire means nothing to them. They can easily change that overnight for name and fame.
It is us( ordinary people) who care about values.

[QUOTE]Eventually when it's time for your kid to get a job, you want him to dress smart in western clothes,

Again, you are mixing two unrelated things. I dress western style but I still give importance Indian culture and values. Family bonding and values will come only when kids grow up in Indian setup where they get to meet and spend sweet time with grand parents, cousins, relatives and other people who care about the same culture.
