It's genetics, Gene encoding hairs come with mitochondrial DNA, Which Always comes from maternal side. So guys can look up to their maternal uncles how there hairs are going to turn later on. Obviously there are nutritional as well as environmental factors which influence it and many diseases too.

Carrying a toddler around shoulders where only interesting thing he/she can hold onto is your hair. So I blame it on my son :)
